UK Elite Orienteering League Preview – Scottish Champs
Juniors
For the juniors, the Scottish Champs is the last race in the 2015 series.
The W18 podium is already decided, with Helen Ockenden taking first place, Alice Rigby second, and Hannah Cox third.
The top 2 places in M20 are already decided, with Aidan Smith first and Dane Blomquist second. Third place is still up for grabs with Oliver Williams and Adam Potter currently tied on 226 points. Neither are taking part, which leaves William Rigg and Mark Purkis the opportunity to overtake them both.
Julie Emmerson can take the W20 series with a top 3 result on Saturday, but Megan Carter-Davies and Sarah Jones are safe on the podium already. If Julie fails to score another 24 points, then Helen Ockenden will finish 3rd.
M18 is the most hotly contested class of the weekend, with Alex Carcas, Alastair Masson and Thomas Wilson all able to win the series coming into the last race. Andrew Barr and Daniel Stansfield could also end up in the top 3 if results go their way. Carcas currently holds a 2 point lead over Masson, with Wilson another 12 points behind – all to play for!
There will be a prize giving after the Scottish Champs prize giving for those who are present.
Seniors
With 4 races left, including 3 races at the 'final weekend' in June, Ruth Holmes is currently top of the league, ahead of Jess Tullie and Alice Leake. Of the top 3, only Jess is competing this weekend, but Hollie Orr, Claire Ward, Kirsten Strain and Kirsten Maxwell are among those still in contention in the overall league taking part and looking to close the gap to the leaders.
Duncan Birtwhistle is currently leading the men's class, having taken part in every race so far. He leads Murray Strain and Graham Gristwood (who have only 5 and 4 scores each respectively). Duncan and Murray are not competing on Saturday, but Gristwood will look to add another win to the 3 he already has, and James Tullie, Doug Tullie, Hector Haines and Alasdair McLeod will be looking to move up the league before the final weekend in Stirling and Perth.
£2000 Prize Fund
Thanks to generous sponsorship from Silva, DOLM and GGmaps (among others), we are proud to announce that we have a £2000 prize fund to split between the prize winners, as well as bags from Silva for the top 3 in each junior class, and the top 6 in the senior classes.
Provisionally (although this is subject to change), the prize structure will look like this -
M/W21
1 - £300 + Silva bag + Trophy
2 - £200 + Silva bag
3 - £100 + Silva bag
4-6 – Silva bag
M/W 18/20
1 - £100 + Silva bag + Trophy
2 - £60 + Silva bag
3 - £40 + Silva bag

Small change -
The prize giving will be held at a later date due to the fact that 3/4 of the UK EOL organisers who were planning to attend this weekend are now sick and not going!
Also, at least 2 of the winners won't be present

Seniors
There is one more round of competitions left in the senior league – the Schiehallion weekend hosted by Forth Valley Orienteers and Tayside Orienteering Club in June. Prior to the final weekend, James and Jess Tullie are leading in the men's and women's categories, but - with 6 races to count (including at least one score from the final weekend) - anything can still happen, especially as very few athletes have a full set of scores yet. Likely to be fighting with James for the victory in the men's class are brother Doug Tullie, Murray Strain, Graham Gristwood, Alasdair McLeod and Hector Haines. British Middle and Long champion Jess will have strong competition from Ruth Holmes, Helen Bridle and Hollie Orr. Claire Ward will probably not be able to take a top position, as she will only have 5 non-zero scores!
M21 standings after 7 races
1 James Tullie 274 (6 scores) – entered sprint, middle, long
2 Duncan Birtwistle 270 (6)
3 Douglas Tullie 256 (5) – entered sprint, middle, long
4 Murray Strain 240 (5) – entered sprint
5 Graham Gristwood 226 (4) – entered middle, long
6 Alasdair McLeod 190 (4) – entered sprint, middle, long
Hector Haines 163 (4) – entered middle, long
W21 standings after 7 races
1 Jessica Tullie 315 (6 scores) – entered sprint, middle, long
2 Ruth Holmes 268 (6) – entered sprint, middle
3 Alice Leake 256 (6)
4 Helen Bridle 235 (5) – entered sprint, middle, long
5 Hollie Orr 230 (4) – entered sprint, middle
6 Kirsten Strain 220 (6) – entered middle, long
7 Rebecca Harding 204 (5) - entered sprint, middle, long
