Heading off to Snowdonia soon and going to be doing some navigation practice and teaching navigation techniques to some fellow scout leaders.
We will be using the OS 1:25K map mainly, but wondered if anyone knows of an Orienteering map for this area (or part of this area)?
We will be in the area of Cnicht and the area to the north of Cnicht up to the A498 (Capel Curig - Beddgelert Road)

There is/was the Moel y Dyniewyd map used for JK Day 1 1984. Also Beddgelert Forest has a map.

Beddgelert Forest map used to be available from the campsite shop. Don't know if it still is.

ERYRI has a map of Braich Bryn Engan (just south of Capel Curig) that they might let you use if you ask them.

There is a map of Moel y Dyniewyd. I'd suggest you need someone from ERYRI.

Re: Moelwyns Snowdonia - Orienteering Map?
Neither Beddgelert Forest nor Bryn Engan are in your target area so don't seem to be relevant. However, as mentioned above, Moel y Dyniewyd might be (3 km west of Cnicht) as may be Gorddinan (about 5 km to the NW of Cnicht). I suspect that both maps are now long in the tooth.
The Moelwyns is classic terrain for wet day outdoor activities as it's not so high and has abundant small scale detail. I've taken many groups there myself for navigation practice in the mist and see no reason why you don't stick to the 1:25000 OS map. After all, isn't this what your scout leaders will use themselves?

Re: Moelwyns Snowdonia - Orienteering Map?
Moel y Dyniewyd would be an excellent area to show off orienteering. I have a screwed up old copy covering in red pen. It has loads of mid-small features and although the map is old, it is mainly cliffs and contours so likely to be usable. Which having been said, there are a lot of small cliffs on the 1:25 map too, so you could certainly do some challenging nav-exercise with it (while pointing out how much better an O-map is!)

Llyn Elsi, a mapped area around a reservoir above / south of Betws-y-Coed, was used during Open 24 in July 2010. The map was produced by Peel Surveys for Eyri Orienteering Club with assistance from Sportslot funding from Sports Council for Wales. I'm pretty sure the map was sold in some shops in Betws-y-Coed, as there wre some permanent course posts.

Re: Moelwyns Snowdonia - Orienteering Map?
I have copies of M17 /M40 Badge courses on the 1984 Moel y Dyniewyd 1:15000 map that was I think was probably produced by Harvey's for an earlier JK. It's A4 so have been able to scan and now have Day 1 & 2 courses on a pdf. I was running shorter courses even then so probably less red ink than on Graeme's version ! The colours though have faded so it will be difficult to interpret some of the brown features. But there are plenty of black ones !
I remember the event to this day ~ A "you must be joking" experience. One of my first attempts at mountain orienteering. Essentially a brown map full of intricate brown contours. But I completed the courses ~ I choose to forget the time or position !
If you send me your email address happy to send them to you as an attachment. I have PM'd you with my email address.

If you do travel slightly further south into the North of Mid Wales I do have an attic full of old Croeso maps, courses overprinted mainly, no one has asked for them for years.

Thanks for the replies.
I now have a map of Moel y Dyniewyd (thanks Clive) which will be useful (to train me as much as anyone else!).
Looks like wind, rain and probable whiteout this weekend - makes nav even more interesting!

Don't want to be a killjoy and the matter has probably passed by now but most o maps used to have a note on them about seeking permission of the landowner before going on the land. As Moel y Dyniewyd is a possible candidate area for JK2018 we need to be careful when going on other people's land with an o map.
