Let there be no doubt about how seriously the local authorities in Highland and Moray are taking WOC and Highland 2015. Highland Council have just thrown in another £25,000 for the 6 Days on top of the £30K voted for WOC some time ago.
Meetings are happening between Directors of Education and orienteers about how schools can capitalise on the legacy of WOC.
Moray councillors have been signing up to be WOC volunteers, and now we have Cllr Douglas Ross (former chair of the Moray Sports Council and a Scottish Premier League match official) tabling a question in the full meeting of The Moray Council this Wednesday starting at 0930.
You can follow the meeting via Moray Council's live webcast http://www.moray.gov.uk/moray_standard/page_43661.html
We are also getting the word out on social media. @moravianoclub have just Tweeted the news and it's on the Scottish 6 Days facebook page https://www.facebook.com/scottish6days/photos/a.10151437627286759.1073741824.89076126758/10152645637411759/?type=1&theater
Now let's show the councilors how much the orienteering community appreciates this proactive action by retweeting, commenting and sharing on social media. You can also tell your friends face to face if you're not in the social media age.
Onwards and upwards folks!

This is great news SF ! Hope you can feed off the back of the events. Looks like both Invoc and Moravian are already hosting some excellent small sessions and bringing in a lot of new faces.

Just announced (and I heard about this today before it was on the news) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-h ... s-31664475
This is potentially bad news for WOC and the S6D as there will be extra traffic going up the A9 and resources (already scarce) might be committed to this event (25,000 people target). I snorted when I saw where it would be staged - the same people who a few years ago told Dave Peel and I that the only way WOC could happen over their land was if the runners followed the paths.

I suppose it'll have much the same effect effect as Belladrum the following weekend.

Might make for some interesting meetings around Beauly.

The irony for me here being that they won't let a few hundred people "use their paths" during the Aviemore Half Marathon to run between Glenmore village and Aviemore, and instead make them run along the tarmac road. I believe it is due to a fear of erosion/damage to the surface of the trails.
Of course 25,000 music fans and their transport will have little effect on the estate...

Plenty of (positive) effect on the estate loolah reserves......... which is probably all they are concerned about.

Re: Higland & Moray Councils get behind WOC & Highland 2015
A very positive state of affairs being achieved by the SOA and its members, it is a shame therefore to read the latest BO Board Minutes.
"The Board discusses the involvement of Board members and staff at WOC 2015. There is agreement that there should be a ‘British Orienteering’ presence. The Board believes neither Board members nor staff need to be there for the entirety of the competition. MH explains that costs have been looked into and it is estimated that it will cost £1,000 per staff member to attend WOC 2015 for the week. Unfortunately a rota system would not save costs due to travel expenses being a high portion of the cost. MW confirms it is not viable to send staff for the whole week, but queries the possibility of attendance at 2 or 3 days of the event."
Does Inverness have an abundance 5* hotels to warrant the £1k staff member expenses? Presumably any FT employee would be getting paid their normal wage/TOIL for Sun and Sat and only be submitting expenses for their stay at WOC? So Sun - Sat - 7 days circa £140.00 daily expenses, where do I sign?

£1000 sounds a lot, but it starts sounding like a reasonable estimate suitable for budgeting pretty quickly if you do some back-of-the-envelope calculations that include travel to Inverness, car hire in Inverness, fuel to get to all the events, hotel towards the lower priced end of what's available and then start thinking about other things like food, all for £140 / day...
But Board members will be there for the whole week competing and/or volunteering. In my case, I'll be there for over a week, at my own expense (obviously), I'm not expecting to be competing much or at all in between my WOC role and any British Orienteering duties.
But back on topic... This:

Hmm - not sure I interpret that in the same way Phil.
Say it is 850 mile return trip and mileage allowance is 40p per mile (The IR rate) then your £1000 becomes £660 straightaway, which is under £95 per day for hotel, food and other travel expenses i.e going to the events.
The BOF estimate seems about right to me and that is not based on 5* luxury hotels - just saying.
Edit: Dave types faster than me but i was doing some sums
hop fat boy, hop!

Fair point but surely this is THE opportunity for the movers and shakers in BO to put the sport on the map and champion O to every conceivable outlet whilst at WOC even if the budget goes into the red, but then again I see the event levy and membership will be going up from 2016.

The iron horse does come as far as Inverness and there is transport package available for moderate cost as well as an excellent event campsite or even some hostel accommodation.

i suppose it would be too much to ask for BOF staff to actually want to go orienteering?
