This thread will be used to match up British Junior Orienteers with exchange partners in Scandinavia for training / racing opportunities / language exchange and life experiences.
The idea is that you will visit your exchange partner at their home and take part in local training and /or races and then you will host your exchange partner in your family home. The dates and length of stay and the activities you undertake will be arranged between you and your exchange partner and your respective families but the visits are likely to be -for example- over a weekend, long weekend (bank holiday) or week at most (half term or summer holiday / or during school term if appropriate).
The first exchange opportunity is for a 15-16 year old girl (W16) to be matched up with a 16 year old girl here in Halden, Norway. Expressions of interest to me preferably by PM first and then by email. If you would like to participate please give a little bit of information about yourself, your orienteering experience, where you live and why you want to take part. There are no specific selection criteria but a high level of enthusiasm and a short reference (by telephone / skype) from your club or regional coach is required.
If you know anyone in your UK club who might be interested in this opportunity please pass on this information.
I will indicate in this thread when partners have been matched and post requests for new 'exchangees' here too.
More information about the activities of Halden Skiklubb's youth team (UFO 7-16 years) can be found here: http://haldensk.no/grupper/ufo/nyheter

Thanks for posting this. Great initiative! I've passed the info on to a couple of possible candidates.
Any chance of arranging one for 50-something blokes who've seen better days?

Thanks Sunlit Forres. Hope Forres is Sunlit today!
Maybe I will look into your request for a 50s exchange...!
Perhaps it is possible to arrange a house swap / life swap / wife swap
In the meantime if you would like to visit Halden and test the terrain our main annual event is Norwegian Spring http://norwegianspring.no/
You will find information about accommodation on the Norwegian Spring page

Harry,
Glad to see you've not lost the sense of fun
My key benchmark was.... have you hadfun?
I think most fol;k who went anywhere with me will agree we had fun.... whether it would be the 'done thing' in today speak is debatable..... but I will always be thankful to the athletes for allowing me to be involved in their development
And (I can't remember if you were there) the most meaningful thing in my life was being presented with that photos montage in Portugal on my last trip
Kids & youngsters.... get your names down, enjoy & learn about life & maybe you'll discover orienteering running through your veins Winning isn't important.... life is

Well said Gross.

This is awesome Harry. Hope you get a good response. I've emailed the Gramp community to advertise this thread. Maybe it'll strike a chord with one or two of our youngsters.

Thank you mike & PL.
I hope that more people from HSK and other clubs will get involved too. If there is some interest from the UK side then I will spread the idea as far as I can over here. I have contacts in various places in NOR, SWE & FIN so hopefully we will find opportunities for anyone who wants to do this.

There are now 2 girls in Halden keen to do an exchange, both W16s. So if you know someone who is interested but unsure about coming on their own they could sign up with a friend / clubmate.

Thanks for the interest. Original 2 spots are provisionally filled but if you are keen to take part get in touch and you can get signed up to the waiting list til I find more exchangees on the Scandinavian side.

So how did the exchange(s) work out, will it be repeated and expanded?

Re: Junior Orienteering Exchanges - GB <--> Scandinavia
From our prospective the exchange was excellent.
It was unfortunate that our Norwegian exchange could only come when there was very little orienteering on in the UK. A major Norwegian junior competition was on when the 6-days were on, after that there is not much orienteering in the UK in the July/August period.
Our daughter went to Norway when their O-Festival was on and thoroughly enjoyed it.
We will keep in touch and hopefully arrange something again next year.
