I'm struggling to get to grips with OCAD- I'm finding the help files very confusing with so many options.
A couple of questions:
1. For a geo referenced map , using LIDAR data, what's the best co- ordinate system to use?
2. How do I get magnetic North lines onto the map?
I'm sorry to ask questions which must be obvious to experienced users- thanks for any advice.
Richard

Re: OCAD 11 question
I might have answered my own questions but I'm not confident I've got it right. I selected 'British national Grid' for the co-ord. system which seems logical, and created vertical grid lines at an angle of 1.75 degrees W.
So far so good, but I thought the grid would be vertical on the page with the map offset at the corresponding angle beneath it. It's not. The grid slopes off to the W; the map is in the same position as it was when I created the contours.
OK... found the Rotate Map function, so the N lines are now vertical on the screen.
But.. I'd still apreciate it if someone could confirm I'm doing this right (or not)!
Thanks
Richard

Re: OCAD 11 question
I tend to use
1. Real World, with rotation for North (mine is currently -2.5 degrees)
2. Select the appropriate symbol from the symbol pallette (Blue or black-- 601.00?)
Then on the "Map" tab, select "Create Map Grid" , uncheck horizontal lines, uncheck
grid labels, and fill in the vertical distance (500m for 1:15,000, 250m for 1:10,000
and 125m(or similar) for 1:5,000), You may need to set the "angle" to zero if you
have the map already orientated to Mag. North in OCAD. You will get more, and longer,
lines than you need/want. Delete and trim as required.
There are probably others who do it different to above, but there is more than
one way to skin a cat

Re: OCAD 11 question
Thanks for the replies, seems I'm probably on the right track.
The georeferencing document isn't directly relevant (?... I think) since the map is automatically georeferenced from the Lidar data... it certainly lines up OK with google earth.
I'm amazed by the power of OCAD but I've rarely come across anything so un-intuitive for the beginner.

Try Open Orienteering Mapper. Has some good help. Some features much better than OCAD.
Getting better and better and best of all free. Why pay more?

Re: OCAD 11 question
I installed OOM to have a look, but it doesn't seem to support LIDAR import which is pretty important. Still looks good for editing existing maps.
