Since you ask:
- Local events are more enjoyable when there are more people to run against.
- If more people take part in local events you might not need to travel as often to get decent competition.
- More club members = more potential event organisers/planners = less reliance on the same people.
- Better-attended local events mean more event income hence clubs can create/update maps without relying on external funding or having to stage a major event to recoup costs.
- the more people who do orienteering, the better the pool of potential elites.
- national funders are more likely to fund a growing sport
I'm sure others can think of loads more.
