Here's an entertaining festive challenge for y'all, provided by Peter Ross of MDOC. Attached is a map and a set of questions. The challenge is to use Google Earth to answer the questions in the fastest possible time. Post your numbers here if you like - current fastest-of-two is 18 mins.
Fun aside, and caveat'ed by Google Earth not being as up to date as you might like, using this approach means that events (like SROC and MDOC Night Street Leagues) based on street furniture can be armchair-planned with decent confidence.
Not exactly Catching Features, but still it's some sort of test of mental agility.

Thanks - will have a go tomorrow.
Whilst we're talking about easily making street-o this guy has provided a map with all UK postboxes, and codes, making it super easy to plan postbox based street-o

(note it is worth running round and checking them beforehand)

Not sure how hard it would be to include it into OpenOrienteeringMap (Ollie??) but definitely made it very easy to plan a Street-O in North London when i was in Canada a couple of years ago!

Re: Festive Challenge - Virtual Street-O
Thanks Peter! That successfully distracted me from housework for 11 minutes and 48 seconds. How sad is that? Probably not as sad as running round the same area last Thursday in the cold, wet and dark, and squandering masses of hard-earned points by being 6 minutes late back. I can't possibly allow that result to count as one of my 4 best for the series, so I'll just have to make sure I get to all the remaining MDOC night street-O events this winter.

Yes, I'm pretty sure I can put that in OpenOrienteeringMap. Might be a fun Christmas project to do.
Stop talking, start running.

Re: Festive Challenge - Virtual Street-O
And after that surely you can add an algorithm that also sets the optimal course (i.e., chooses post box controls and allocates points for each) given the expected speed of entrants?
Then all the street-o "planner" needs to do is print the maps and take them to the pub - no wait with mobile phones you could skip that step too
Amazing what technology can do. I remember how long it took to draw maps + select controls sites for street-os before OOM. Conservatively 10-15 hours of work?

Just tried the challenge; also about 18 minutes, would have been quicker if I'd found the "zoom" control on Streetview sooner (or had better eyesight!)
