I was wondering if anyone has tried marketing orienteering through the University of the Third Age (U3A).
Every town seems to have one now and it could be a very fertile ground for recruiting new members of a certain age - an age when they may have the time to be valuable volunteers and also have grandchildren to look after. I envisaged a day time group doing real orienteering preparation leading on to a number of tailored events and culminating with a larger scale event. I feel it could make a good alternative to club nights and the Explorer Challenge thing.
What do you think?

SARUM certainly do. There are often U3A people at their local events as there were at the WIM Golden Cap event last Saturday!

So how does Sarum actively engage with U3A Tatty?

I'm not sure. I think that Liz and Alan Yeadon are involved. I'll try and find out, but am away on holiday till the end of the week.

Yep, TVOC does too. We email each local group a PDF flyer - one created just for that target market, I.e. With images of older orienteers and promoting the health aspects rather than the competitive running side of it.
Each U3A group will have a walking or rambling group, and it's the leaders of those groups I email flyers too, as I figure they'll be the ones most interested in it. We've had a few people come to events as a result, even a past club member!
Also, most local Councils have monthly email newsletters they send round to local community groups, and getting events listed there (via the sports development officers) is another way of tapping into that market.

I was more wondering if anyone had actually set up an orienteering group at any U3A.

WAOC had some U3A members attending Club Nights a couple of years ago. I think there were U3A only sessions as well.
