I thought that there might be some interest in a petition being launched by the 'people power' organisation 38 Degrees. They comment on The Infrastructure Bill coming before the House of Lords as follows -
'Could we have just 24 hours to stop England's beautiful woodlands being sold off to private developers? The government is trying to sneak through a law which would clear the way for woodland getting built over. [1] We need to act fast to protect our beautiful wild spaces.
Tomorrow afternoon, the House of Lords starts voting on giving the government new powers to privatise public land. The could mean beautiful woodland gets sold to developers, and precious havens for wildlife are lost forever. [2] We urgently need to persuade members of the House of Lords to protect our countryside by voting against the sell-off clause.'

Re: 'Sherwood Forest: gone? - 38 Degrees petition
The Government have now agreed to reconsider their opposition to specifically excluding the Public Forests from the Infrastructure Bill provisions and have agreed to look to producing an amendment to effect this at the next stage of the Parliamentary process.Speaking in the House of Lords debate yesterday Lord Ahmad (Government) stated:"I shall seek to bring an amendment back to the House at Third Reading that will seek to exempt the public forest estate from transfer to the Homes and Communities Agency." , On the strength of this assurance Baroness Royall agreed to withdraw her amendment.. Progress indeed ~ thank you to all who signed the petitions.

I wouldn't trust the Tory government until its signed and sealed, they will try to wriggle out of any commitment.

Yes, thanks for the update Clive.
I think (hope at least) that even the current Coalition Government has 'seen the light' on public forests.

Until the next opportunity comes along when they think they can sneak in a sell-off without anyone noticing.

Perhaps all Orienteers should become rabid Tories. That way we could buy all the FC land from our "friends in high places" at a ridiculous knock-down price - a bit like what happened with the PO (albeit with the help / total incompetence) of Vince Cable.
PS I think Labour & UKip are equally corrupt and incompetent.

Yes, always the possibility with any government I guess.
Interested to see the following Woodland Trust comment on the latest development -
Therefore we were pleased that last night Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon promised to bring forward an amendment to the Bill at Third Reading making this even more plain.
However this isn’t a substitute for the bringing forward of legislation for the Public Forest Estate. We do still believe that a specific Forestry Bill to settle the future of the PFE – something we have long campaigned for – is the way to truly clear up any confusion on this and other issues. This remains a promise Government made but has still not delivered.
The last sentence is rather significant (before Big Jon picks up on it !).
