OMM 2014
Lots of familiar orienteers out slogging around Kidland Forest and some of the worst of the Cheviots but pleased to see some good results including Freefall Jnr 2nd in the C Class (behind Oliver Williams and Tom Horton). Oli Johnson and Neil Northrop runners up on the Elite. I managed a modest 70th place on Medium Score. That's my dozen KIMMs and OMMs done now...

Re: OMM 2014
Bad Weather courses for linear courses today after some long times yesterday.
Timo Sild and Sander Vaher (SBOC) - both at WOC this year with Estonia - won Elite from Oli and Neil, stretching an 8min overnight lead to 10 today. They were motoring when we saw them early on.
Duncan Archer and Jim Mann had to retire today after Duncan pulled a calf at the far N of the area.
Steve Birkenshaw/Adam Perry lost their SI card mid-way through day 1 so were made NC, but still took part in the chasing start, starting just behind Oli and Neil. The 2 pairs were together at their 2nd control before Oli and Neil pulled away.
Andy Llewellyn (NOC/SPOOK) and myself (ShUOC/SPOOK) were expecting a bit more competition on A. Elite next year then.
Jack Wright (LOC/ShUOC) and Jack Millar (LVO/ShUOC) 1st on B. Sarah O'Neill (SPOOK) and Hazel Tant (SPOOK) 1st ladies ahead of Anwen Darlington (Eryri/SPOOK) and Laura Daniel (SYO/SPOOK)
Olly Williams (DEE/ShUOC) and Tom Horton (ShUOC), as mentioned, won C ahead of Freefall Jnr. Peter Bray (CLOK/UDOC and Aine McCann (UDOC) 3rd overall and first mixed. Catrin and Susan Harding 8th and first female/family pair
Tom and Matthew Fellbaum (MDOC) Won D
Kenny Leitch and Keith Masson won Long Score
Liz and John Britton (MDOC) 1st mixed/family on Medium Score.
Stand out performance - Zoe and Quentin Harding getting 1200 points on SHort Score, to 2nd's 930.
dare say there's plenty out there. A windy but fairly warm OMM. Bit of rain and clag around Cheviot yesterday. SOme good fast running, some forest and some rough terrain, think everyone got a bit of all 3!
Freefall - You just pipped legendary v70 Pennine Fell Runner Roger Ashby, who was 72nd. Plenty of time to add to the dozen!

Re: OMM 2014
It was possibly the worst map I have ever used in a competition - an OS 1:25,000 shrunk to 1:40,000 scale and including the CROW access land in yellow and two shades of forest green. The contours virtually disappeared. There was also a lamination problem which caused the map to disintegrate - we were handed out small poly bags at the start but my map looks distinctly sad around the edges. There was an overlay of forest roads in black - but at one key junction (just above the text Kidland Forest on my map) the zig zag marked was completely misleading. Fortunately we spotted that one...The forest (which was about a third of my course on both days) was virtually unrecognisable due to the amount of logging. Harveys map of The Cheviot (we used it for the Phoenix) covers an almost identical area and I wonder why that was not used and updated? Entry fees are getting pretty high (though facilities were good) and I would have thought they might have covered the cost of a decent map. Of course there are usually good reasons why organisers make decisions (speaking from experience) but it would be good to know more.

Re: OMM 2014
Totally agree about the map. I found the OS Explorer 1:25,000 detail to be mostly accurate, but as you say
I think the base map required varies by MM event. For example, most LAMMs I think have 1:50 Landranger data, blow up to 1:40, and for LAMMs that works fine because in remote Scotland you don't need the detail of fences, or forest rides (you don't pass many of either). 1:50 Landranger blown up wouldn't have worked for this OMM, where rides and fences were needed for navigation and finding the best running.
- it was hard to read at 1:40,000
- it had unnecessary tourist information like CROW land marked (in a race either it is in-bounds, or out-of-bounds, and if the latter it just needs purple hatching)
- the lamination came away so it wasn't waterproof.

I wasn't contracted to provide RouteGadget for this years OMM.

Does that mean it definitely will not be appearing at http://www.omm.routegadget.co.uk/ (because the only way for that to happen is for it to be contracted via you)? Or might that still happen under the organiser's own steam if / when they get to it (because they have the access they need to do it)?

Re: OMM 2014
It's probably not going to happen.
They don't have access to do it as they have never wanted to, or had anyone with the knowledge to do it.
As the OMM isn't a normal O event there is a bit of work needed to get the stuff in the right format for RG.
Amongst other things there are issues because they used letter codes rather than the SI unit numbers, so a conversion is required.
As it is a commercial event they used to pay me to take care of all that stuff and be available to upload it. I've been really busy lately with Race the Castles and other things and completely missed that the OMM was imminent, and no one had contacted me to organise stuff in advance to remind me.

further support for the theory that the new people running OMM just don't understand how important the map is

Re: OMM 2014
I can't comment on the OMM, as I wasn't there, and I'm often the first to moan about poor maps.
But in their defence, OMM have organised two very good OMM Bike events this year - Kielder in the Spring, Orton in the Autumn. These are what used to be the Polaris Challenge. The autumn event also included an OMM Light for runners using footpaths and other rights of way, which seemed to be very well received. There were a lot of younger competitors (and women)!
The events did have a very experienced planner and cartographer, and the modified OS maps were certainly excellent for bike orienteering.
I think the events are still running at a loss. If OMM do not organise them, who will?
I'm sure the organisers will accept helpful feedback, but being rude about them won't help, will it?

Re: OMM 2014
Karen - I am not sure we are being particularly rude about things. Aspects of the event were very good from the organisational point of view. I do however think that there needs to be more consideration given to the navigational challenges of the event - that includes a map fit for purpose and in this day and age the ability to easily compare routes with one's rivals e.g. Routegadget. Even some pristine copies of the maps/courses on the site would be a good start at this stage while the event is still in our minds.

Re: OMM 2014
Surely the OMM realise that having a map which is both starting to disintegrate and inaccurate is a safety issue first and foremost (and a pain in the arse too)

Re: OMM 2014
Congrats to 2 of my old (and I mean "old" as well as erstwhile) partners on their respective great results:
How many LSs have K+K won now? When they started winning they were top 15 Elite runners and it looks like they are still highly competitive.
Of course nice to see JB competing in his 20th KIMM/OMM and achieving his "majority" as we'd have called it in ICL.
- Kenny Leitch with Keith Masson on Long Score
- John Britton with Liz Britton 1st mixed/family on Medium Score.
