Any map teasers or terrain description? I don't think I've ever been there (last year's northern night champs was Middleton Woods wasn't it?). I guess it must be a good area if it's being used for the British Night Champs.

Map teasers and terrain description to follow. Aire proud 'owners' of Middleton Park, Leeds used for Level B Night O Peter Palmers in 2008 and Middleton Woods in Ilkley used for the windy Northen Nights last year.

Well, (couldn't resist the opportunity) if you would like an excellent warm up for 2015, the South-East Night Championships are coming up at the beautiful Knole Park, Sevenoaks on 25th October - see http://www.saxons-oc.org for details. Entries via Fabian4.

Having planned the PPR on it in 2008 (Sunday morning, 2am, meeting the controller in a pit in the middle of the area in pouring rain is seared into my memory!), I'd say Middleton Park is a pretty good venue for a night event (certainly better than Middleton Woods). Lots of pits from the mining! It'll be even better for the BNOC, as it'll be winter vegetation by then.

Re: British Night Championships 2015
hmmm....
it doesn't look immediately appealing for a British Nights - seems difficult to get a 70min winning time for M21s (the brown course on RG criss crossed the area and was won in 42), and the main technical feature is a load of pits many of them in bramble stripes. Maybe you'll at least have the golf course at night?
I realise there are usually only 200 people competing, so you won't want to use your prime areas. And at least it's easily accessible!

Middleton Park is one of our prime areas!
I ran that brown course. I don't remember the broad stripe brambles being much of a problem (it was January), but narrow stripes are to be avoided. And the pits are mostly bell-pits, usually surrounded by a small raised mound.
The area has a very long history of mining, and is also home to the world's first commercial railway to successfully use steam locomotives (in 1812), and the world's oldest railway in continuous use (since 1758). This is now a heritage railway and can be seen at the north end of the map.

I remember running the Northern night champs there in the early 80s. I remember no detail about it other than I liked it.
What I remember clearly is the scout club floor space that was, typically for those days, offered as cheap accommodation. At about 2 in the morning a scout leader decided to go to this remote spot to play his music at full volume quite unaware that we were all sleeping on the floor

Maybe the Leeds Stadium part of the map will be used for a large scale ISSOM map section as at last year's Northern Night Champs? That was really good. Though I'm guessing that's where the parking will be.
Looks like a good weekend to visit family in Leeds.

If people want to go sprint orienteering in the dark then organise a "sprint orienteering in the dark " race. Last year's silly little bit of blown up map was just an irritation. Let's just keep it simple we are trying to find out who is the best cross-country orienteer in the dark so we really do not need any more enlarged micro-orienteering stuff. If this is going to happen put it in the flyer so I won't bother entering.
