Re: Only Connect
So who are Paul Beecher, Simon Spiro and Sean Blanchflower then?
Never seen them before myself. Anyone else?
A bit of a cheek calling themselves orienteers.

Re: Only Connect
If they win they can call themselves Orienteers.
The program's a bit boring though, I think I'll go and put the dinner on.

Have to say they were a bit pompous! Claiming to know nothing about TV then recounting the whole plot of the Brittas Empire and everything about Eurovision. I was rooting for the Romantics

Paul Beecher and Sean Blanchflower belong to WAOC! Couldn't find Simon Spiro.

A couple of them are WAOC members I believe. As Sean says, pretty boring stuff.

Re: Only Connect
Wow, what a friendly forum. I think you are being a touch judgemental!!!
Homer hasn't seen them before so they shouldn't be allowed to call themselves 'orienteers'. Does he know everyone who orienteers? Do you have to be in his clique to be an orienteer?
They answer the questions correctly and get called pompous. This from the person who gives 'prizes' for publicity! I don't think orienteering has had such good publicity in a long time.
Paul, Sean & Simon - well done boys. Good luck in the next rounds

Absolutely shameful post. I'm so sad to read this, and I hope they never do.
You don't have to be a coach or post on Nopesport to be an orienteer. All you need to do is go orienteering every now and then. Paul and Sean were even kind enough to give me and several other students lifts to events back was I was CUOC. They are exactly the kind of people we spend so much effort attracting to orienteering, yet also the kind of people certain orienteers are great at alienating.
Our sport is open to all, it's not a secret clique-y cult where you have to be known personally by Homer to count yourself as an orienteer. Though it certainly feels that way sometimes.

You are probably right - but to be honest I think the whole programme is a bit pompous. Now if we were talking about Pointless...

Re: Only Connect
Not the pleasantest set of comments.
My only thought was that for a team who one might expect to figure highly in spatial skills the verbal skills of the O'ers was also pretty tasty.

Re: Only Connect
Flippant comments can get us all into trouble, but given the consensus in nope responses, surely time for some humble pie from Homer? Not being a million miles away, I suspect that there may be a back story to this, but there are still maps to be read and SI boxes to be dibbed even in the flatlands (albeit it was a trip down memory road using a control card and pin punches in Sunday).

Re: Only Connect
I didnt watch it all since (like Homer) I didnt recognise anyone, but I thought the "orienteers" both looked and sounded human, unlike some actual orienteers I know

Re: Only Connect
Only Connect is a quiz show for those who like to think more than other quiz shows.
Orienteering is a sport for those who like to think more than other sports.
Seems like a good example of targeted marketing to me - most of the targeted marketing that I have noticed is aimed at activities which share the physical component (e.g. running) rather than the mental component.

Re: Only Connect
Apologies to the Orienteers.
In retrospect a bit silly of me to assume that because i'd not seen any of their names before that they weren't orienteers.
They certainly did well.

Re: Only Connect
I'm a fan of OC and it was a nice surprise to see an Orienteers team on there. If anyone has a yen to go on any other TV quiz show and is looking for a partner or team member, I might be interested!
