Were whistles compulsory at the sprint event?

Re: British Sprint Championships 2014
No, they were only recommended.
I found this surprising since they are allegedly compulsory at all West Midlands events and given who the organiser was.

'Whistles are compulsory at all WMOA events', and as POTOC are a WMOA club, Why were whistles not compulsory??

Re: British Sprint Championships 2014
On the whole a well-planed event, I agree.
On cheating ... a quick (emphasis on quick) glimpse through the heat results list at:
http://www.cix.co.uk/~neper/bsdc14h/ind ... assresults
shows one competitor disqualified, who is a mate of mine and self declared his crossing of oob at download. This leads me to a couple of points:
1. Given the announcements mentioned cheating several times I can only assume that more competitors made moves which were illegal and weren't caught or reported
2. A self declaration is a level of honesty that ought to be mentioned in the final results.
3. If there are illegal to cross areas that would give an advantage if crossed, then these need better monitoring.
I've not looked through the final results yet my over 3 minute leg makes it too difficult at the moment

Is event promotion one of the centralised things BOF is doing for British Champs type events?
No ranking points for the prologue yet/though? Have the rules changed?

Because the British Orienteering Rules (which you of course read so that you will be fully prepared for the event) state at 1.1.1(a) (and you can't get much more prominent than that!):
"For the purposes of this Competition, the classes M/W18, 20 and 21 are combined into two classes, called Men’s Open and Women’s Open."

Oh FFS! I saw a tweet by one of our top elites saying that and I thought he was joking. I seriously hope that's not true. What on earth does she expect the commentary to concentrate on?! Its not the West Midlands 2k charity fun run.
The sport of orienteering really needs to get a grip of itself if it wants to have any credibility in the wider world of sport. I'm sure those companies who sponsor our elites would have been well chuffed with the reported silence when they ran in.
For whats its worth, this
A PA system, if permitted by the landowner, is to be provided along
with radio controls, a spectator control and commentary on the races.
is a requirement for Level A races, and there is multiple mention of enhancing the experience for "spectators" in the guidance for the British Sprints. Not sure how that works if you dont know who anyone is...

And it is already paid for by the British Orienteering event contract!

I see the Middle Championships is already available on Routegadget. Is the Sprint also going to be on Routegadget?

POTOC may not have routegadget installed. Could another club offer to host?

I would hazard a guess that she didn't. There isn't exactly a big clamour for the right to stage this w/e. BOF spent quite a lot of time trying to persuade me that I wanted to organise it. It is all very complex with all those unnecessary qualifiers, and high stress sorting the start list, which can't be done until everyone downloads and all the protests are resolved. So I decided that if I wanted to put on a high-profile sprint race, I wouldn't do it like that. And I do and I won't

Re: British Sprint Championships 2014
An oob area that was crossed by several competitors is located in the dip at the corner of this building.

It's obscured on course 3 map by the number '16'. I believe it was a control on the W55 course amongst others.

Re: British Sprint Championships 2014
I understand that the organiser ... feels it is too focused on the elite
What on earth does she expect the commentary to concentrate on
No idea what the organiser feels, but the basic premise of the first claim above is probably true. Whether this is a problem for the sport is worth debating.
10-20 years ago commentators did refer to more non-elite competitors than they do now. They seemed to have access to a mass of other information (recent major event organisers / planners / controllers; those serving the sport in various capacities at a national / regional / club level; Compass Sport contributors, etc etc) as well as age class leaders and elites, and used that to good effect as soon as competitors started finishing. No idea how the information was compiled, although much of it is probably held in various places at BOF. Keeping people interested in the finish as a whole means that there are more people watching at the point when elites actually finish.
More recently I tend to 'switch off' from the commentary because much of it seems irrelevant, and as a result I am less likely to hang around.
Perhaps the best support / atmosphere for the elite finishers might be obtained by the commentary concentrating as much on the non-elite!

Re: British Sprint Championships 2014
I almost went out of bounds when warming up for the start of the heats. Was running from the start in the general direction of the finish when I realised that the tree I was just about to pass behind had a notice on the front stating 'out of bounds'. Swerving left kept me in bounds, but I was surprised that this stretch (only 100m) didn't have barrier tapes to separate the pre-start / spectator area from the runners approaching the finish.
In the finals, did anyone try going straight after the road crossing at the north end of the map (159 - 175 on course A2). The lowish ornamental hedges / flowerbeds were the sort of feature that I assume are always going to be uncrossable, but here they were mapped as crossable thicket and bashing through would have been fastest for my leg. (I looked on my way out, and there was a clear strip about 10cm wide between two types of planting.)
