Peter Palmer Relays

I am Organising the PPR 2014 and it looks like we'll receive a significant shortfall in teams versus the last couple of years.

The cause for this, confirmed by emails from several clubs in each region is:

1. No Scottish Teams due to a competing event in Scotland referencing Juniors.
2. No SW teams due to the Caddihoe Chase incorporating SW Championships

The effect of the above is to reduce entries by 6-8 teams out of a total forecast of 25.

As we had to pay in advance for land access (numbers related) and accommodation costs, required for this event the above has had a somewhat sobering effect.

The area to be used is in the Midlands (Nottinghamshire) just off the A1, not central for Scotland I appreciate, but it rarely is.

Have you thought about adding an extra trophy for teams that don't meet the entry criteria for the existing trophies. Ie a HALO trophy for mixed club/all boys/all girls/runners doing more than one leg etc? It might generate a few more teams even at this late stage, and at least give an excuse to email club captains to publicise the event.

It is a shame that the Scottish Junior Inter Areas and the Peter Palmers clashed this year. Unfortunately it is becoming increasingly difficult to schedule events without clashes. A couple of years ago the JHIs and JIRCS were both moved to September. With the British Sprint and Middle Champs also in September this year and the Race the Castles events in October, the number of available weekends in the Autumn is extremely limited. The JIA also tries to link-in with one of SOA's 7 Regional League events because it has an individual competition as well as a relay.

This year the JIA relay also clashes with a Scottish Inter-club relay event - the 8-Person Relay, but the organisers and planners of both events did a great job of combining them at the same location on the same afternoon.

The JIA event has been running for well over 20 years, and now attracts over 100 juniors from across Scotland. For many it is where they get their first experience of relay orienteering, and is often the event that first encourages them to orienteer outside their own local area.

My own Scottish club only sends teams to the Peter Palmers every two years because the event is usually so far away from us. As we went last year we wouldn't have come down this year, JIA or not.

Well done to the SYO/ShUOC/HALO combination for organising the Peter Palmers today - it seemed to go really well.
Having live results in the marquee was great and the live tracking was fascinating - watching teams change position.

I don't know the rest of the results, all I can say is MDOC were just 2 seconds behind OD at the end of leg 6. A very tight finish. Well done to both teams for giving such an exciting finish and many thanks to all the organising team for putting the event on, the juniors really appreciate it.

Nathan Lawson (OD) came into view at the spectator control with a clear lead, perhaps 200 metres ahead of Alistair Thornton (MDOC), with 800 metres and 3 easy controls to go. On the way to the 3rd last he appeared to be having some sort of problem – he hesitated before the control, doubled over and was possibly retching, then punched and moved on. I don’t know if Alistair had seen any of this, but as Nathan moved on towards the 2nd last he was clearly moving much more slowly and Alistair was speeding up to close the gap. At the 2nd last Nathan still had a 100 metre lead and looked like he was going to be ok, but Alistair was still closing. At the last control it was a 50 metre lead but 10 metres short of it Nathan doubled over again, coughing and retching and really struggling. He stuttered to the control with Alistair bearing down on him, but crucially Nathan got to the (single) punch first. He then managed to find a sprint to cross the line less than a second ahead of Alistair. (The quoted 2 second time difference is at the finish punch, beyond the finish line and after the race was over). Had there been two punches at the last control the result might have been different.

So, no, not as close as the finish in Scotland, but that wasn’t why it was exciting.
