RouteGadget unpopular?

Re: RouteGadget unpopular?
18 tracks (so far?) out of 192 runners at our recent Watermillock galoppen event, and one of those is a duplicate. I had RG up very soon after the results. Thanks to those who did contribute anyway.

Re: RouteGadget unpopular?
Roughly 10% on both AIRE events from this weekend. And they were up pretty quickly.
It's a shame, as I love to see where other people went - particularly when you run a replay starting at particular controls, to gauge how your route performed against others.
I always put my data on RG, and my M14 son now does so as well, but he's always a bit disappointed that none of his peers do so

Re: RouteGadget unpopular?
There is still something wrong with the redirect.
For example all links at http://routegadget.net/ to routegadget.co.uk still launch java version. Also if any language is defined in URL java version shows up.
At the moment there is 69 new events linked (last 7 days). 37 of those links bring up upgraded RG1 and 32 old java version. About half of those java ones are routegadget.co.uk events (actually using RG2).

Agree with Andypat!
Drawing your route is a bit temperamental.
Tried a few times to post my route.
The save button is not enabled for me.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks to this and further investigation, I have finally got it to work. Details posted here for anyone else who has the same issue. (And it might be useful for the RG UK site to have a list of potential issues and workarounds).
IE9 has Tracking Protection. I didn't think I had this enabled, as under <Tools> in the menu bar it still offers the "Turn On Tracking Protection" option. But under <Tools> <Manage add ons> there is a <Tracking Protection> add-on type which had a "Your Personalised List" enabled. (Not sure if this is a default, or if I have triggered it in the past and it was automatically enabled on upgrading to IE9). This list was preventing access to (amongst many others) 'jquery.min.js' and 'jquery.-ui.min.js' from 'googleapis.com'. Unblocking these two lets RG work (or at least display maps etc - I haven't yet tried adding routes).

Having upgraded to IE11 I still just see a blank white screen beneath the RouteGadget2 header, when I click on the routegadget link for a specific day.

Re: RouteGadget unpopular?
It is getting better here. For example Mid-week events with quite constant participation and RG publishing delay seem to be getting now 50% more routes than year ago, at least those I have checked. Some events are even breaking old records: A Helsinki race series event last Tuesday got more routes that ever, previous record was from 2008. I think you should face similar progress sooner or later.

But only 11 routes drawn out of 217 for last Sunday's highly technical Stockhill race ... *
I'm wondering if a Focus and/or CompassSport article extolling the virtues of RG is needed next as it could be that many competitors remain ignorant of its existence etc.
Simon? Paul?
* could be that many simply didn't know where they went . Me included.

Glad it's up. I'm still waiting for the Newark race to be posted - and it was one where several of us on Sunday said we were looking forward to comparing routes.

I've updated the RouteGadget UK website with more info about the change to RG2 and the way things are now set up and why.

Re: RouteGadget unpopular?
Updated info gives the impression you haven't yet noticed RG1 has evolved. Also all that presenting RG1 as a java app and reasoning the change-over to RG2 by getting rid of java problems and making it usable with phones and tablets may sound odd for those who know how things are these days. It may make it look like the site is not that well up to date, since facts and reasons are outdated.
I would suggest taking some of the RG1 java bashing away since it is not true and may confuse some visitors. And to not make it sound so odd for you could also re-think the reasoning, maybe simply tell even if RG1 has evolved and doesn't use java either RG UK is anyway dropping RG1 and changes over to RG2 for getting better support for UK needs. And that's why UI and features available at RG UK and regular RouteGadets worldwide differ. And not keeping RG1 running parallel cuts installing/maintaining work in half.

andypat wrote: There still seems to be the issue where click/drag and click your route get mixed up - its really really frustrating especially if you have a wireless mouse - maybe due to the connectivity?
I've just updated all the routegadget.co.uk sites to version 0.8.0. The main changes which will be of interest:
- Drawing function changed to address the click/drag problem which hopefully makes things a bit better. It's difficult to be certain since my wireless mouse doesn't suffer from the same problem.
- The new javascript Splitsbrowser can now be integrated with RG2. This needs to be enabled before it will work, but I've done most of the routegadget.co.uk sites. If yours is missing and you want to enable it then instructions on how to do it are on Github. Once enabled you will see a Splitsbrowser icon in the header when looking at an event. Clicking on this opens Splitsbrowser in a new window.
- The About dialog window (click the question mark icon) has been updated to include event statistics for the selected events. It also shows all the user comments that have been entered, which makes things a lot easier than searching through the results for each course.

Re: RouteGadget unpopular?
Returning to the original import of this thread, use of RG at major events seems to have dropped further still since the JK this year, as the table below shows (with respect to the recent Lakes 5):-
Swindaleooooooo3.5%ooo1615 runners
Simpson Groundo6.9%ooo1706 runners
Grisedaleooooooi6.9%ooo1706 runners
Pike O'Bliscooooo6.8%ooo1311 runners
Hampsfelloooooo3.5%ooo1615 runners
One curiosity is that the usage on Days 1 and 5 was about half that of Days 2, 3 or 4. Any ideas why?
Another curiosity is that the data for Days 2 and 3 are identical to one another ... a mighty coincidence perhaps, or is there another reason?
And was the significant drop in Day 4 numbers due to a few hundred opting out of the 400m climb to the Start? It can't have been the weather or the terrain as these were arguably the best of the week ...

The drop on Day 5 was probably due to the delay in uploading Routegadget.

I am not at all convinced that that is the best comparison. A better comparison would be to another multiday summer event. The stats for routes for Croeso2012 are: 7.0%, 6.7%, 6.6%, 6.4%, 7.9%. (I got an error when trying to view the routegadget for day 1.) Those are similar to days 2-4 of the Lakes, which would leave one to ask what caused the reductions in numbers plotting routes for days 1 and 5 of the lakes - and Mikey has made a suggestion for day 5.
