I am fairly sure this was trialled at an evening urban event in the North of England somewhere about 6 months or so ago. I was tempted to go as I was travelling up from manchaster for work, but it was just too far out of reach to get there in time.

Re: Sportident Air+
It was also used at the pre-World Cup Final mixed sprint relay in Switzerland last month.
It's pretty cool, basically a slightly larger than normal SI card which beeps and flashes (rather than the unit) when you are within 2ft of the control.
Some runners were running with it tucked into their headbands to hear the beep better but I didn't have a problem with using it on my finger as normal (and no risk of it getting pinged off if a tree grabs your headband.

As will be used in Forth Valley's Mixed Sprint relay & individual sprint competition at Stirling University Campus in March 2014 (day before the first Scottish League Race at Devilla).

I belive that an advantage of this system is that it works with existing SI boxes so clubs would not need an expensive restock of kit. But maybe someone out there can confirm (or not)?

Re: Sportident Air+
I have come across what are apparently two different contact-free punching systems from SI this year.
One of them is the one that has been described in this thread using the SIAC1 SI Card which is compatible with both new contact-free control units and standard ones (at least the same ones as for type 10 and 11).
As well as being contact-free the new control units had extra features including an option for a short-range radio link (described as similar to Bluetooth but propriatory) which could transmit punch information to a separate unit which would then send it over GSM.
The other used a wrist mounted ecard which seemed very similar to the Emitag - the main difference I noticed was the size and visibility of the LED. I don't know if the wrist mounted ecard uses the same contact-free control units as the SIAC1. I assume that it are not compatible with standard control units but can't be sure.

Re: Sportident Air+
Was the one on a wristband not the EMIT contactless system?
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

No, it was not the Emit one - it looked fairly similar, but definitely had an SI logo on it. Also I have now checked the results and they state "SPORTident Air+".

Re: Sportident Air+
It was the Clitheroe SROC double sprint.
I got a new shinty flashy SI SI Card early in the year but then the next 3 events I did were Emit / Emit handsfree and the SIAC (Air+ I see it is called now - assuming the same).
SIAC seemed to work OK except when I was starting my 2nd loop running back through the start finish area and decided that I had to do a double crossing of the road to avoid the handsfree finish. They put a bouncer out there later to stop others running past it
