Interesting little article on Focus about your tax liability if you are paid "generous" expenses as a coach / mapper etc.
Without discussing the dubious morality of chasing people over £200 tax when also letting the nobs hide millions in tax havens whilst still benefiting from UK services (eg a state educated workforce / state provided road network / state funded security and police services) the article raises a very valid warning.
What it doesn't dwell on are the advantages of "coming clean" beyond not receiving a demand from HMRC for back tax plus penalties.
You are forced to keep simple accounts so you can know if you are getting a bit of pin money, working for well below the minimum hourly rate or effectively subsidizing the sport, and adjust your input / fees as you see fit
If you register as self-employed you can then set all your allowable expenses against tax - 40p a mile for car use / surveyors wheel / a proportion of household bills & computing costs ( I draw up maps at home) etc..
You can pay NI at a very low rate - good for repairing your NI contributions record which may have been adversely effectively by recent changes that increase the number of years contributions required for a full pension (and possibly other benefits).
You regain the moral high ground when slagging off tax evaders.. sorry avoiders like Sir Philip green and most of the individual bar stewards that back the political parties.
