Nopesporters
I'm looking for your help in identifying any areas in GB that would be good places to train in preparation for WOC sprint this year.
You can see the old map of the embargoed area here: http://www.woc2013.fi/SSL/woc.nsf/0/C51 ... Hiukka.pdf (PDF)
The area to be used is basically the western half of the map. What I'm looking for are any ISSOM sprint/urban maps where a town and path filled forest meet. Alternatively, any forests which look like this but mapped to ISSOM standards. Does this look anything like a map local to you?
I've a couple of free weekends coming up so I don't mind travelling a bit to get some relevant training. Anywhere in SOA/NW/NE/YH is probably in scope.
Cheers

MOR had an event in Aberlour in Mar. I would hope we have some maps left over.

Hampstead? Ilkey is good for the terrain change but moor rather than forest

The urban part looks straightforward. Would it be best to concentrate training on sprint in fast runnable terrain with many smallish contour features ? A Graeme suggests - a forested sandune area ?

More usefully, Dalbeattie (Scottish Sprint Champs 2006 - Barhill and Collieston Park) had a forest / town combo. Fun though it was, it didn't really work as a sprint, because the forest section was so rough and technical that it became an 8 minute race and 5 min run in (or similar). I expect you can plan something more balanced and WOClike.

There's a great new updated map of Oakenhead by Lossiemouth. (For some odd reason the recent event on routegadget used the old survey.
Super fast forest, lots of paths and loads of features.

Not sure if it's quite complex enough or if it's ISSOM mapped (I think it is) but Nethybridge could be alright...

Nethybridge is not IISOM standard and the map was OS based, with pretty sketchy forest survey (as requested!).
Banchory would fit the bill - Glen O'Dee part is partly mapped to ISSOM and has plenty of paths. I can fire a copy down to you if you wish.

Grantown-on-spey / Anagach? I have a unified map somewhere but not sure it's ISSOM, don't know who keeps the OCAD.
Lossie / Oakenhead - lots of urban and v. fast forest but a very limited interface between the two. Map showing some of both here, updated forest bit here
Lhanbryde / Crooked Wood: map here

Fly to Gothenburg, < £40 return in May. Recent SM sprint maps have some forest on them, there must be others.

Not so much outside the box.... you guys used to do it regularly in 'your day'. Remember for WOC 2001 there was even a club house booked for 3 months as a drop in training facility. But I guess Ryanair costs more now, flights from Edinburgh or Prestwick aren't so easy to find & there's no lottery funding so the guys nowadays need to work also....
Good to see Murray & co from Scotland all going out to Chile in July for the World Games

PS - thanks to TheLoofa for pointing out I got the wrong dodgy South American country
