WOC 2015 Race Arena design
I am currently looking at the arena designs for WOC 2015 and noted information in Bulletin 4 for previous WOCs. If anyone has any photos of these areas rather than the actual athletes I would be pleased to have a look for ideas for our own design. Can anyone tell me what sort of shelters teams have been provided with - I am assuming some sort of gazebo (with sides to give some sort of privacy). How many of these were inSwitzerland/France? Do "minor" orienteering nations share and major players e.g Team GB get their own? Midge netting might be appropriate though I haven't seen any when visiting the areas.

Midges were a MAJOR issue at WOC '99 - esp in Glen Affric - the Finns were particularly impressed by them (having expressed scepticism when initially told how small they were "but we have mosquitos THIS big in Finland" sort of response.....until the little buggers started biting

Athletes were quite happily sharing gazebos at the recent World Cups. There the attraction was the shade. There may be hazards other than intense sun in Scotland.

Jon,
why on earth would you want to protect other teams from midges ??
seriously.

Thanks to those who have supplied info by PM. Spookster are all your photos action shots or do you have some arena pictures? I thought of buying 30 of these:
Nice orienteering red (in case those who are colour blind don't realise)
See http://www.meshuk.co.uk for midge net. Only £395 for 30m x 1.2m specially for team GB and those willing to pay a premium (that roll would do 5 tents). Inverness shouldn't be too much of a problem though...

If you're ordering 30 Colin, would they consider doing you a special-edition with a 50-50 diagonal split white and red? Or would that be just too sad.

Why not ask previous organisers?

Ask them what exactly? I am attending the IOF High Level Event Seminar in Edinburgh this weekend so will have the opportunity to talk to Swiss, Finns and Italians and possibly a Swede or two.

Colin,
when we won the bid in France I then took a bunch of pictures of the French WOC arena just for this purpose, though I have to say it wasn't necessarily a model of how to do it! (I expect the location in the mountains with a lot of rocky outcrops made arrangement of the arena more difficult than it would have been in a nice flat field).
I didn't take many pictures of the WOC arena in Switzerland as there were several of the organising team there looking at it themselves.
I'll send you some pictures, or post them somewhere you can see them.
p.s. ask the previous organisers "please could you send us a copy of your event equipment list, showing items, quatities, purpose, suppliers and prices". You may not need it, but it could be very useful.interesting.

Martin
Thanks for that - send some of your best shots. I think you have my email? I had an interesting evening working out the budget for event arenas last night so it will be interesting to compare lists.

Apparently colour has an influence in determining sporting outcomes:
http://www.dur.ac.uk/r.a.hill/red_advantage.htm
with red associated with success (at least for men)
Perhaps you should get gazebos in a variety of colours and make sure team GB uses the red one?

But (unlike the one pictured) red on the inside

Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Some of these may be useful (from France and Switzerland). Sorry, most of my pictures are of athletes, not the arenas.
