Sorry if this has been asked before. Is it possible to print a paper copy of a map from route gadget? When I try they are always distorted. I find looking at maps on screen difficult (grotty eyesight)
thanks

Re: Route gadget question
Probably not a useful copy. To upload the file to RG you need to downsize the image which means the resolution you'd be printing out would be pretty useless. You'd really need the original OCAD document which would be copyrighted to the club

Re: Route gadget question
Yes it's easy. Screendump (Alt+PrtScn) and paste into a picture editor (e.g. Photoshop, but Paint would do), crop to get rid of the superfluous crap around the edges, then print.
However, your printed map will probably be at the wrong scale and of only part of the area: it usually takes some photoshop tweaking to stitch multiple screenshots together and rescale.
In theory files are supposed to be reduced for RG but in practice this often doesn't happen. That's why ( I think) RG rarely displays maps/courses at the right scale (control circles are usually way too small).

Re: Route gadget question
View map in full screen and press the prt sct button and open mspaint and press
CTRL + V
Now save the file as jpg, bmp or png whatever you want and now you can take a print of image.

Re: Route gadget question
Thought these had been posted on here before, but can't seem to find them. So:
How to access a RouteGadget map image file
Load up RouteGadget for the event from which you want to extract the map file. View the source code of the RouteGadget page, and locate the line that reads:where X is some smallish integer. Make a note of the value of X.
- Code: Select all
<param name="karttaid" value="X">
Now, the RouteGadget page you are viewing will probably have a URL along the lines of:
- Code: Select all
http://www.somewebsite.com/somedirectory/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=N&kieli=
Relative to that, the map image file will normally be located at:where X is the X you noted down earlier. The file extension is .jpg even when the map isn't actually a jpeg.
- Code: Select all
http://www.somewebsite.com/somedirectory/kartat/X.jpg

Re: Route gadget question
Scott's description works if you just want the map, but if you want the route or routes than screen dump is the only solution.
The trick is to set the magnification at one click down from maximum zoom, as that is the native resolution of the image. But as Greywolf points out this may be a very large image as the person uploading has not resized it as recommended. So you may only see a very small area of the map on screen. If you zoom out the quality of the image deteriorates.
If you can use as large a monitor screen as possible you can get larger areas to screen dump, so don't try it on your laptop screen, get a massive external monitor. Or find someone with a 23" + monitor and ask them nicely to do it for you

Re: Route gadget question
It would be great to have maps from Routegadget for training purposes... but slightly nervous about
a) the copyright implications for mapper, club and Ordnance Survey
b) permissions to visit the mapped area
particularly when this is being advertised on a public forum?? Danger of Routegadget maps not being made available in the first place?

You are right to raise these issues and I'll try and explain them.
The copyright of maps is usually owned by the club that has uploaded them to RouteGadget, so they know what they are getting into.
Not all maps are based on OS data, but I pay a licence fee to the OS to allow me to display maps that do on RouteGadget UK.
Permission to visit the mapped area depends on where it is. In Scotland the rights of access allow it for individuals. Many other areas have public access and as long as you obey the normal access guidelines you should be OK.
The quality of the maps you could download from RouteGadget could be very poor when printed and would not be ideal to use for navigation. So it's always worth contacting the club whose map you would like to use and ask for a printed copy and at the same time check the access situation.
If you have been to an event and have a copy of the map already, you could check out the routes that other people took from RG and then go back to the area and try some of them out for yourself.

Re: Route gadget question
Many thanks to you all for your help.
I wasn't wanting to use the maps to go training on an area - I appreciate the access restrictions, not to mention embargoes. But when I enter an event on an area that has been used before and the maps are on routegadget, it's useful to have a look at the map to get a feel for the area/style of mapping. And I just find looking at a paper map so much easier then on screen.
Now, back to the computer....

OK, so what if the route gadget url is like:
- Code: Select all
http://www.name.routegadget.co.uk/name/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=17&kieli=
How then would you append kartat/X.jpg in the right place in the URL?

Re: Route gadget question
it could depend on the routegadget installation, but for routegadget.co.uk kartat is a 1st level directory so
http://www.slow.routegadget.co.uk/kartat/106.jpg
would work for example..

Re: Route gadget question
I don't seem to be able to use the process described above to access the RouteGadget map image file in the new RG2 application. Anyone know how to do this in RG2?
