2 questions:
What purpose(s) do you think the rankings should be fit for?
In your age class, how many places higher or lower do you think you should be ranked?

One of the objectives of the single rankings list was to facilitate comparisons across age classes, but it was also intended to provide a better ranking within individual age classes.
The question was posed because it should be obvious that getting the individual age classes right is a prerequsite (but not a guarantee) of getting the inter-age class rankings right - however the accuracy (or not) within age classes is much easier to assess.
And - naive I know - if your focus is on individual races then maybe you'd be best off looking at the results of individual races...
but a) the important output of the rankings list is the list based on 6 best scores, not the points from individual races
f you're so convinced that it doesn't work that you're not even going to look at it then it's never going to be good enough for you is it?]

That was my plan, especially since those 1200 point runs are getting rarer by the day.
Ali Wood wrote:No - night events should not be ranked, except maybe on a separate 'Night Ranking List'. Good night (Goodnight!?!?) orienteers quite often specialise in that area, and the times are more spread out, thus creating anomalous results.
But this thread has, unsurprisingly perhaps, headed towards the general inadequacy of the ranking system, and as I have suggested elsewhere, the ranking system seems to be producing figures which bear little resemblance to one's own intuition of how well one has run on a particular day. "Don't know why - but there it is!", as Harry Worth (I seem to remember) used to say.
Mostly I know that I've run, say, more or less as fast as I normally run, and know I made x minutes of mistakes, and yet the ranking obtained is up and down like a yo-yo, and this year mainly down even though I'm pretty fit! (no lasses, I don't mean that... )
And yes, it seems to favour the fortunate few who excel at shorter distances, including sprint/urban and do more of those events.
