For heaven's sake, lay off the largely unfair Sophie-bashing. How many of us would have done the same and sent it on if asked to forward it to interested parties in the local area - quite a few I imagine.
I guess the lesson is probably learned and probably next time Sophie will include a phrase like 'I am sending this in a personal capacity not as a BOF employee'.......
On a similar note:
Mrs H (just out of curiosity!), did you choose to send the Bakewell race details on to your club members, or did you decide on their behalf that they should not see it?
If you did send it on, did you make it crystal clear whether this was in your 'official' capacity as 'club press officer' or not?
Should BOF be promoting a fell race?

You both seem to be getting very touchy about this - I merely asked whether people thought a fell race should be promoted in opposition to a local O event. If it had been on the Saturday i'd have thought it a very good idea as it might have encouraged some to make a weekend of it - for months now I've had my own campaign of EVO Extra Value Orienteering - encouraging our own organisers to highlight complementary events - ie local attractions such as open gardens - primarily to encourage the occasional orienteer to think it's worth coming and making a day of it - I have never envisaged that they would do the other activity and not the orienteering! - I have seen several weekend events which have pulled in a variety of other activities as well - it's a good idea. what an earth difference would it have made if I told sophie I thought it was a bad idea - she'd already done it. and anyway they all think i'm the wicked witch of the West up there anyway I'm sorry if sophie's feelings are hurt by me saying so.
Just seen jon's post - i havn't done anything yet , as I said this is the first time i have been asked by sophie to promote an event personally to the membership - I think the best thing is to ask the committee what they want to me to do rather than take a unilateral decision.

Perhaps, and perhaps Sophie has read this and is annoyed by it. However, this forum is entitled "discussion" not "BOF bashing" therefore the reason Mrs H posted it here is promote discussion about the subject. I'm sure if general consenus is that BOF promoting fell races in competition to Oing races is good then she'll accept public opinion and pass the info on (committe approving and all that). Am I right Mrs H?
In hindsight though may have been better to refer to "person X" at BOF rather than name names.

thank you fatboy - it will certainly be person X from now on and i will definitely pass it on if i get an overwhelming mandate to do so - Two committee replies so far - both "bin it"
As for me and Gross - we are both consenting adults....

Whats the problem with Mrs H asking a question. She didn't state an opinion only asked what people thought. I think that this so called Sophie bashing is a load of rubish (I'm being polite here). I know because of my position within the association that she has often been accused of BOF bashing (I think incorectly) but only by paid members of staff. As far as I am concerned people should be strong enough to accept criticism or they should not be in the job.
I assume that Sophie didn't check her facts as I am sure that she wouldn't have tried to promotion an event which could effect an O event. It's an unfortunate situation which just shows how carefull you need to be in such situations.

We seem to be making a mountain out of a molehill here.
I agree BOF should not be promoting FR at expense of O, but if BOF had simply sent details to Mrs H with a note saying "your members may be intersted in this, do with as you wish" would we be making such a fuss?

What is this thread all about. Mrs H got nothing better to do than to try to stir up trouble
Its this committee approach that lets political correctness madness run rife.
So the fell race at Bakewell is in direct competition with an O event. IS IT?
NOC summer league event, C5 white to orange only with score event. Held in Nottingham. I would not consider driving all the way to Nottingham to sample an orange course. A fell race in Bakewell, now then, Peak distyrict countryside miles from Nottingham and the chance for some serious running practise, Yes, I may just take that option. Thank you very much for letting me know about it.
Your posting Mrs H has probably given this event more publicity than Sophie could ever have imagined.
Before you get on your high horse, look at the facts.
I agree we orienteers / BOFs first interest should be for the promotion and continued success of Orienteering in this country. I would also agree that to promote any other event which directly clashes with a C4 , C3, National event etc is also out of order. But given the facts I see nothing wrong with letting people know the FR exists.
