Should BOF be promoting a fell race?
I was quite suprised to receive an E-mail from sophie today (in my capacity as club press officer) asking me to promote the Bakewell fell race next sunday which seems to be in direct competition with a NOC summer league event. i know there's not much on this weekend because of JIRCs but should BOF resources be used to promote an event which is in direct competition with an orienteering event when i can't recall her ever asking me to promote an individual orienteering event so personally to HOC members? what do you think?

I don't see a problem with perhaps listing fell races in the calendar, particularly the navigation ones - after all many orienteers do Karrimor, Capricorn etc and MTBO - all not specifically BOF events. The disturbing bit is as you say asking you explicitly to promote it, esp. with the proximity of a NOC event. What's in it for them? Anybody from BOF listening like to justify it (better be good I think...)?

Is BOF actually promoting the event or is it just Sophie asking you pass the fact that there is a fell race on this Sunday.
Sophie is from Bakewell and has probably heard there is a race on that Orienteers might be interested in doing, seems like a good idea to me. Nothing wrong with having a choice.
Looking at the BOF site I don't see any mention of the fell race.

I think you should encourage people to go and hand out fliers for upcoming orienteering events at the fell race.

I think your splitting hairs.
Please circulate around your members
Thanks

What is that if not promotion and as sophie is using her position within BOF to do it then it is reasonable to assume that BOF is doing the promoting. the crucial point is there is an orienteering event going on reasonably close at the same time which she has not mentioned - so where is the choice? If orienteers want to go fell racing then they should look on the fell racing web site. i wonder how NOC members feel - are they paying their subs and levies for the promotion of another sport and an event in direct competition to their own?
I think Greame has a very good point - i trust sophie will do the decent thing and set up a BOf stand promoting orienteering at the fell race.

BOF are way ahead of the FRA on this one - the FRA has decided to stop publishing fixtures on its website. Only changes to the annual published list now appear, so you have to join FRA and hand over your money before you get to find out what the fixtures are. That's marketing for you.
I don't see anything wrong with fell running individuals or clubs promoting fell running to orienteers, but as others have said it is not BOFs job and we ought to be promoting orienteering to fell runners.

Sophie is paid to promote orienteering not fell racing - if she has an interface planned between the two or any other agenda then maybe she should have spelled it out in her initial e-mail- why should i chase after sophie to get her to justify her actions? I want to know what BOF members think because they are basically her employers. In all fairness there must be many events which might interest orienteers any weekend anywhere in the country - is sophie going to start promoting them all?

No, and neither should they be doing the MTBO - it's not even a UK event.
What they should be doing is giving us full information on the new RDOs that they've announced today. I've never heard of the EA one - and he only appears on a couple of local results over the last four years - not a good sign

I agree that Sophie is paid to promote Orienteering, as far as I’m aware she does this. Chasing her isn’t necessary as I don’t believe she has to justify herself, although you could have spoke to her about the promotion of a non-O event to Orienteers, if you think BOF members are going to be really that bothered.
I personally don’t have a problem with the odd fell event appearing in the BOF calendar, but I know that this would never happen, with the Bakewell race or any other race, that’s why I look to the relevant organisations/magazines if I want to do a particular event.
Ask a number of Orienteers what they majority of their training consists of and they will say running. You only have to look at races around the Peak and further afield to see that a large number of the participants are Orienteers - Orienteers like running. They enjoy doing something other than Orienteering all the time. Sophie is aware of this, as she hears about Orienteers doing well on the fell scene quite often, with the likes of Jon Duncan coming 3rd at Ben Nevis.
I reckon you should just circulate the event to your club members and let them decide, as they are the BOF members you speak about. It’s the first time, and probably the last time, Sophie will promote an event that might interest local Orienteers. I reckon her intentions were completely innocent with BOF member’s interests foremost in her decision to pass on information about this event.
