From Attackpoint, as nobody else has posted this yet: an article on orienteering from American outdoorsy manly magazine Men's Journal, taking a different slant to much of the publicity in the UK.

I like this a lot. Obvisouly targeting a specific demographic, and doing it very well.
Original Adventure Race would be a fantastic tagline to adopt ...
...though the ensuing puns could be more of a curse than a blessing. OARienteering anyone?

Highly entertained by these quotes in the article:

“The classic thing is you’re running like crazy, but you keep meeting the same 50 year old lady at every checkpoint, because she’s more efficient.”
“Despite being the fastest runners in the field, we end up almost 49 minutes behind the winners. Clearly there’s a skill here that we’re missing.

SOC had a canoe/yacht O many moons ago when we had 2 very good sailors in the club. One guy sailed at the Olympics for Ireland and had taken up orienteering

There was a canoe o on at Ravenglass the same weekend as the British champs. http://www.canoe-england.org.uk/events/ ... s-seaquest

I spotted it before the british champs as my son is a keen kayaker, but prefers river to sea.

What a great description of the sport. I've read all sorts of marketing speel written by experienced orienteers over the years and it's never quite sounded so much fun as this guy sells it!
Maybe we need to start asking the newbees how they would describe their experiences?

Canoe-O my first (and only) attempt was at a World Students training camp in Sweden in 1984 - Our accommodation was next to a flooded river/lake and we planned a wee course round the marshes and inlets. Various shenanigans led to a canoe being capsised and sinking... the recovery of it was long and arduous.
