The Peter Palmer Relays are going to be held this year after not happening last year. There is a twist with the option of up to three runners going out on the yellow leg, with only first back counting.
1.Any views on this?
2.In the publicity info there were photos from a bygone time. In one two female Harlequins were at the take over Jenny Edlington and Ruth Hammond. Hannah Wooton was also in this team. I'm sure most of you students have memories of the Peter Palmer Experience. Do you want to share them for todays juniors?

Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.

I think I'm one of a select group that did more Peter Palmers than anyone else - was at the first one in my wellies as a W11, before the age restriction came in, and competed till my last year as an eighteen. It's always been a fantastic event, due to many things:
- My complete inability to even run a flawless orange at Sutton Park - I blame it on sleep deprivation.
- Running in a crazy thunderstorm at Beverly in the night time watching lightning crack over the golf course.
- Coming in in a sprint finish for first place on leg 2 at one of the Southern ones only to spend the next tens mins going "WHERE ON EARTH IS MATTHEW BURDEN?!!" Little did I know but I'd gone out in seventh and somehow passed the leading pack - Matt was counting the lights and waiting for the fifth before he came into the pen - grrr! Not happy Becky.
Eating a trillion Mars bars before running at dawn and crashing half way round - sugar rushes not great at 5.30am.
There's so many more - what a fab event. It's good to see it resurrected.

Closing date may not be for another month, and many of the junior club captains may be embroiled in exams, but COBOC are only a small club, and are feeling a bit dispirited at the lack of interest shown so far. Last year it was cancelled for lack of entries, and I think they may have made that pragmatic decision before closing date. Very disappointing for clubs that had entered, especially for older juniors, who lost their last chance to compete in it after years of participation
It's going to need a lot of help from other local clubs to make sure it runs this year, but with no entries just a few weeks before everyone goes away for the summer, the clubs really need to know if it's worth getting everyone organised for when people re-appear in September.
Twin Peaks have altered their date to make sure there's no major clash of fixtures, so get those entry forms in the post, or let COBOC know you're going to get in an entry, even if you can't fill in all the details yet.

On the topic of allowing more yellow runners to go at once, I think it is a great idea. It means that more of the younger/less experienced juniors will be able to take part without the huge pressure on them. I know that some people may argue that this is not what a relay should be about, but at this age/experience level it's most important to keep the youngsters interested and give them the confidence.
At the same time, if more juniors from the same club run the yellow, starting at the same time, it adds an extra competitive edge to their race.

Without a shadow of a doubt the mighty Walton Chasers will be there.
Becks I remember that thunderstorm it destroyed our club tent which we reckon must have taken a direct hit. Our sleeping area was in the jockey room which had a corrugated tin roof, it was like trying to sleep in a drum. Those in the main building had a brilliant view of the storm through the big arched glass front window.
One of our head torches developed a fault part way round and Kevin had to map read by the light of his watch then run holding the battery cable to the lamp coonection.
Brilliant competition was sad to see it cancelled last year.
Whats the point of 3 yellow runners. At hand over will they all be on the same course? in which case they will all end up following each other and finishing together anyway. May even distract each other to the detriment of the team. If the courses are gaffled then it is a lottery as to which member of your team on the yellow course gets the 'easier' leg as overall not all courses will be used by the same teams.
Suppose one benefit is it gives more youngsters the chance to participate, the down side is that it potentially acts against those squads who have only one person on that leg.
Would like to know the logic and reasoning behind this proposal, unless I am missing something.

dont think it'll be that good.....i mean what happens if your've got two yellows an they run in and hand over and then the third comes in, their gonna have no idea whther they need to hand over or not, or am i being thick, plus, smaller clubs have problems getting teams anyway so adding that will just giv the bigger clubs an even bigger advantage.........but eryri are sendin a team........purely 4 experience, we're gonna come last!!! lol, sounds good tho, went down two yrs back but didnt run, was gr8 exp tho, cant wait 4 this yr.......they btr not cancel

If you have a very good yellow runner then putting more people out on the same leg really doesn't give you any advantage. If you have 3 average yellow runners (as a lot of clubs will do. It's not usually hard to find people to run yellow) then you take a lot of pressure off what can be very young children. If this means they enjoy competing for their club more then this is a good thing. It also means that the runners have some more immediate competition as they will be setting out at the same time as people they know well. For a lot of the teams at the Peter Palmer relays (especially the slower ones) you don't often have many runners around you.
I'm pretty sure no two runners from the same team will be running the same gaffle. This does mean that some teams will get easier legs but this is an unfortunate side effect of gaffling anyway, especially in a relay like this where most legs aren't repeated.

I s'pose for sarum having three runners on yellow is beneficial because although only one will count, we have so many yellow standard juniors who will want to run that it means that we can let more of the youngsters get a run.

the three runners idea was taken from the Ungdomens 10-Mila in Sweden where its been used succesfully for years. If it improves particpation and can make some teams slightly more competitive then I'm all for it.
as for the PPR, what a great event, it would be a real shame if it disappeared, i would urge as many clubs as possible to send a team.
