After exhaustive research we concluded that after many variations of the name Craig a' Barns, Craig-y-Barns, Craig a Barns had been used we should use Craig a Barns. Confusingly the same area was called Drumbuie at the last JK held here so if you were hunting around your map collection that's what you should look for.
The Ordnance Survey called the area Craigie Barns in their 2nd Edition map (1900) but by 1908 it was Craig a Barns. Bartholomew called it Craigie Barns in their 1933 Quarter Inch series! Nobody is quite sure where the apostrophe appeared on the a'.
Dunalastair has been Dunalastair for quite some time - should we have perhaps renamed the area for those who may have had a bad experience there in a summer event in the past? Is renaming areas a valid thing to do?

Back to the question:
Strictly not renaming an area but clubs have split an area into two before as a workable solution to a year long embargo eg <Area> North and <Area South>.

There's plenty of precedent for it. Simpson Ground was mentioned recently, having started life as Chapel House, which gained a certain reputation.
As regards Drumbuie, I renamed it Craig a Barns in my indexing system

I thought that the name Drumbuie was used because there was a substantial section of the map which was entirely new. Simpson Ground also acquired a great deal of new area. Wimberry Slade and Sallowvallets were I believe 100% the same area, and the infamous Wentwood did't get any bigger when it became the delightfully sounding Cadira Beeches

Re: JK2012 - What's in a name?
We sort of created a name for one of our maps - it has a nature trail called Daisy's Walk and since Rendlesham was once sheep country we assumed it was the old name of a sheep walk and as its now forested we called it Daisy's Wood. We subsequently found out that the nature walk was named after a lady called Daisy who worked in the FC office. It was her favourite bit of the forest and they named the trail in her honour when she retired.
