Numbskull
what you are being told is that the pain of injury, i.e. specific damage to body tissue, is not the same thing as the pain of working yourself really hard.
Your example is no use. If you injure yourself you should take heed.
Moving on from that you don't seem to have grasped the concept right.
you can ignore pain (the discomfort of working really hard) to an extent, fine. Thats what you'd need to do in a race.
You can't use pain to make you go faster, not in an endurance race situation, if something hurts you, properly hurts you then it will slow you down, if you try and go faster it will hurt more and you'll slow back down.
I think you've got it all confused with the psychology of how top athletes respond to tough situations and challenges, not to pain.
Do they quit or take inspiration from set-backs, responding positively ?
i.e. when the going gets tough the tough get going.

To prepare for the discomfort of running i find it very useful to imagine this discomfort before i start.
I find a nice quite spot, and imagine running round teh course when all of a sudden teh discomfort sets in. I try to imagine not just what it feels like but also the thoughts that are going through my head. Then i imagine that the pain goes and i'm back to running freely and concentrating fully.
Basically before i run i know that i will experience teh discomfort and by being prepared for it it makes it much easier to deal with.
