Re: EYOC 2011
Interesting to note that most countries have taken 4 atheletes for the M16 whereas GB only 3.

Yes, good luck to all the competitors from GB.
It appears as though the GB team are not there yet as there is a noticeable absence from the photos in the gallery.
If not, why not? Isn't it better to get familiarity with the area / conditions before the first competition day?
Are we preparing to fail or failing to prepare?

Re: EYOC 2011
On the one hand, the lack of British team members in the photos does not mean they are not there.
On the other hand, some of the team may well have been taking exams this week - I know my kids were. This may have affected travel plans.
And on my third hand, I haven't got a clue either way, so why try and stir up trouble with speculation.
Good luck to all the team.

You asked a similar question last year, and Rockaldo gave a good reply.

The team travelled out today, and no doubt they are well prepared.

Indeed I did and no doubt will again next year.

I didn't respond to Rockaldo last year as there seemed little point.
Although all the real preparation is done before the competition, surely it helps to arrive earlier than the evening before? It must be better to become acclimatised to both terrain and climate before the competition. This doesn't guarantee success but it must help. Of course, as we've seen, arriving late doesn't preclude success.
Let's hope for another example of this in the Czech Republic this weekend.

Re: EYOC 2011
I'm almost certain that they have exams this week. German, Electronics and some Maths were held up to Wednesday. Statistics & German is on Monday.
These Champs are certainly shoe-horned in for the 2nd year 16's. Difficult timing, requiring special permission from Headmasters and contingency planning for potential delayed flights!!
Good luck to them all.

Re: EYOC 2011
It's great when there are strong performances but it is IMHO more important in preparing athletes for JWOC given the need to fit with exams.

This does not make any sense whatsoever. None. If you didn't reply last year I suppose you would have conceded to the fact that my reply was sufficient but exactly one year later you bring up exactly the same point which infers that you still don't get it.
Like I said last year it comes down to money and like many have said here school. OK it would be great for the juniors to experience the terrain they will be racing in before hand but how long before is optimal? A few days before is not optimal as in the few days before a race that you are peaking for you don't want to be still preparing for it, you should be prepared already. You should be resting, not trying to discover the secrets there and then. The secrets need to be discovered long before. This can be done in many ways, getting in touch with local clubs to ask about the terrain and looking at relevant maps. Finding areas relevant domestically and training there. Obviously the best way to prepare is to go out a few months before and have a training camp, i doubt the Swiss team with there huge resources funded their EYOC athletes this luxury. The aim of EYOC is to introduce international racing, a first step on the ladder to international success. I went to EYOC in Czech and arriving any earlier than we did would have been detrimental as the food was awful. The overriding factor in success of an athlete is consistent training for the most part of a year before the event.
I would be grateful if you could explain to me how the athletes will benefit from arriving before the competition like you said last year "even one more day would have made a difference" ie what you want them to be doing there as far as training goes. Otherwise I look forward to this next year.

Of course athletes can benefit from arriving in advance of a competition. Just getting out on a model map helps with mapping style etc.
But with limited resources & other pressures then sending the youngsters out to EYOC the day before is not a problem.... in the case of dodgy food it can even help !!

I can't get them here either but I thought it might just be the server at work not liking it. Anybody getting any texts from the event?
