Really enjoyed the live streaming. So did Bart and Lisa, so much so, it was a real struggle to get them to bed!
Respectable result from Scotland; 51st. Slightly lower than last year, but closer in time to the winner I think. Particularly impressive from Doug on the long night.
So Halden win yet again. Did Kalevan Rasti get their tactics wrong putting Thierry on long night rather than saving him for the last leg?
Good runs from GG and Scotia also.
Sorry not to have been there again this year. Might have to take Bart next year....
At least we have the Harvester to look forward to.

Re: Jukola/Venla 2011
Finished positions:
51 Scotland (last year 44th)
255 Bristol
373 Team Nopesport (last year 498)
SLOW and London still running on leg 10, in around 900th and 1000th place.
Next year it's at Vantaa, which is where Helsinki airport is, so travel there couldn't be easier.

I gave up about midnight - internet connection frustratingly slow these days.
Whats the verdict on the terrain? To me it looks a lot less scary than last years.

Re: Jukola/Venla 2011
Really enjoyed the coverage (despite the language barrier), which really showed the fitness and power of the top runners, and the difference between elites and so many of the others who were wandering around like lost souls. Orienteering is a sport for all right enough. It was fascinating watching the leading group trying to find different routes to give them an advantage, and sometimes the confusion caused by the gaffling. Cutting across the marsh before the final loop rescued 2nd place for Hertner and Kalavan Rasti and 3rd for Delta's Novikov ahead of an impressive run by Pasi Ikonen. What a last leg by Lundanes for the win by Halden, though, and excellent runs by GG and Scotia.
Solid performance by Team Scotland and well done to all other GB runners and teams.

Great fun trying to spot the GB runners as they came throught the TV controls - though one of the highlights was spotting (we think) TheLoofa come up to a TV control check code, check map and then head back into the forest just as the third lap leaders were coming though to lap his team. Awe inspiring to watch the master in action on the long night lap.

Yes Neil that fits in precisely with my first visit to that control. It was my No8, and I'd been following a lovely elephant track from No6 while making a parallel error directly to it. I knew it was the wrong description but I thought I'd better check the code. As I usually remember a couple ahead I knew immediately it was No8 and where I was. So it was back up another elephant track to No7 (226m away - isn't Jukola data amazing!) with loads coming the opposite way. Then back to the control in question still with many going the opposite way to me.
I thought I'd been lapped before then - so I've checked splits. Leaders were there 2:56:38 into the race and I reached No7 at 3:01:30. So it looks like my first visit there occurred in the 90 second gap between the first pack of 10 and Thierry leading the second pack. So he could have been one of the first people I bumped into going the other way.
Neil - as I'm a modest sort of chap I've got that sneaking feeling that in your last sentence you are no longer talking about me.

Someone managed to get a headcam video of the change of lead on the penultimate Venla control:

My new hero, Juha Ylinen of Ristiin Rastiin on Long Night/Dusk/Morning/Midday, who was out for an epic 8:34:43. Look at some of the splits - gutted his route isn't on routegadget!
