If you are searching for a new orienteering area go no further than the following http://www.forestry.gov.uk/website/fore ... NFD-8EYJWF
The Forestry Commission has recently published the National Forest Inventory as both pdf (pretty low resolution) but also as GIS shp files. These can be read in quite a few different packages including Quantum GIS (Open Source) plus free ESRI package ArcExplorer or ArcGIS Explorer. At present the map consists of undifferentiated areas of woodland. Later this year (date not yet decided) they intend to publish the versions of the maps that includes a breakdown of woodland areas into 'interpreted forest types' (i.e. conifer/broadleaf woodland, young trees, etc.). You should monitor their NFI webpage:

See, some good value from the Forestry Commission!

Re: National Forest Inventory GB
There's plenty of value in the Forestry Commission without any paperwork they produce!
