MESSAGE from Ken Daly
A few months ago a request was made to the SOA Executive, in the hope that we could find a way to enable more of the top M&W21 Elite orienteers to be fully competitive in our SOL series. More specifically the request was made because an opportunity had been identified to possibly combine the points of the M&W21 Long and M&W21 Elite courses at SOL5 & BEOC respectively, being held on the same day in Culbin.
The problem relates to the top M&W21 Elite's often having so many relay, GB and foreign commitments that clash with our SOL events, that they struggle to achieve the necessary 4 out of 7 results needed to be fully competitive in our SOL series.
For its part the majority of the SOA Executive agreed that the number of "counters" in M&W21 at our SOL series was worryingly low, the winner should be the best person rather than the only person with 4 results, and we should encourage M&W21 competitors.
A variety of statistics and several combination ideas were considered before the SOA agreed that points should be combined in the following way.
The top Scot in each of the 4x M&W21 courses on that day, should receive 1000 points and the Scottish runners behind them should receive points based on the top Scot in their respective class. The 2x M21 courses would then be merged and the 2x W21 courses be merged. The net result would be that 4 people would receive 1000 points and hopefully more M&W21's will be competitive in our SOL series and the series be more meaningful.
This points adjustment has not been agreed for junior or veteran competitors running up or down to the Elite races.
I have only recently managed to inform the event Entries Secretary of this scheme, and hence the lateness of this notification. I do not expect it to result in anyone changing their entries however any such request could be made to the event Entries Secretary however he is under no obligation to make the changes. He has indicated that any such requests should be made immediately.
I have not asked the event Organisers to calculate the Elite points nor to put this information in the pre-event details. It is more likely that the Elite points will be calculated some days after the event.
We accept that there is no perfect solution however this solution has been decided upon and we thought we should share the information with you.
Have a good run.
