BOC WRE - the long leg

The M21E and W21E courses had a long leg right across Wharncliffe. It was 1.9km for the men (20 to 21) and 1.7km for the women (16 to 17). Looking at Routegadget, there are at least three different routes taken by several people each.

I think I'd have gone south, but the fastest route is perhaps straight. I didn't even see the northern option initially.

Fastest time on M21 hasn't put his route up - wonder which way he went?

I decided to go all the way round to the south. Approach from above looked dangerous before it tracked up and potentially slow if the rocks were bad.
Then I binned a minute with a parallel track error right at the start Wish I hadn't done that . I'm still happy with my route, though if I'd seen the path by the pylons I'd have taken it.

I went south on the track on the equivalent leg on M40L, mainly because I am so much slower running in terrain than on a track. I suspect this might be the case for many less fit orienteers like me. I'd be interested to know what the factors were for the elites in choosing route choice on their leg. Speed? Safety? better attack point?

I went south as i had a bit of a cold and my muscles couldn't take the terrain and my head couldn't take the extra thinking. would have probably still used the ssme path track junction as an attack point regardless. Fluffed the control but bounced off the ride as planned and did a quick time, dispite dropping circa 1 min. Think it was a good route

I think the men's control, being lower down the slope, gives a lot more possibilities than for the women's control. My course had a similar control to the women and there was no choice but to attack from above. This was difficult to achieve successfully.
If I'd been doing M21E, I would have been very tempted by the southerly route, using the path along the pylons (as per Oleg?).
The narrow rides on the straight route were horrible and (with the benefit of hindsight) well worth avoiding.

I went straight - at the speed I was going a path route would have been a bit boring. As Homer says, the narrow rides were pretty grotty, but otherwise it was fine. I was a bit worried about getting lost on the featureless slope at the end, so came in via our number 24 and then attacked off the boulder with the circular path around it due E of the control (which was pretty obvious).
