Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha - what a great story - come on British team members, how about some front page news.......
(I'm sure many current and past team members have participated in naked runs or O in Scandinavian forests - or Arthurs Seat in Embra!).

Re: Prizes for Publicity
Jon,
I think I recall seeing you frolicking, along with the rest of the team, after a World Cup race in USA/Canada in 1989/90 ish, in fact didn't you bring a tree trunk for the fire from miles away? Can you confirm/deny that?

Quite possible - but it wasn't naked frolicking as far as I can remember!

Re: Prizes for Publicity
I remamber the late Arto Rautinen and a couple of other Swedes running naked around the very old fashioned St Helens in Tasmania on New Year's Eve.
Quite definitely unacceptable in Australia, but so unlikely that the residents simply stopped what they were doing and gawped - one man in a telephone box dropeed the hanset and stood transfixed for several minutes after they had passed

Re: Prizes for Publicity
There is also a half page article in today's Telegraph (Weekend section) on orienteering - after a journalist came along to a recent TVOC event. The article is great for attracting newcomers - really captures the 'sport for all' approach, yet not losing the running and competitiveness of it.
The attached image is the maximum size allowed as an attachment - shame, as the original was quite readable whereas this isn't. As soon as I find a link to it on the Telegraph website, I'll post that too.

Re: Prizes for Publicity
Cracking piece Mike. It's your amazing publicity efforts that brought this about.
Club press corresepondents and social media reps will do well to remember that the best publicity is the stuff that's not aimed at orienteers. I loved the quote about if TVOC are anything to go by, the sport is incredibly welcoming to newcomers.
This is where we can all do our bit to help. Most newcomers will probably stay as occasional "local" participants for a while, but the more you get to know them and involve them in what happens in the club and at events, the more hooked they'll get. And if they happen to be a Telegraph correspondent so much the better.

Re: Prizes for Publicity
Thanks Mike. I'm not sure how the journalist found out about the event - hopefully through all the publicity we've been doing! However, most credit must go our chairman, Alun Jones, for liaising with her and to Ian Buxton, one of our coaches, for explaining what to do at the event.
Sorry to anyone if the attachment appears upside down, it looks fine on my PC yet on my ipad it's upside down! Confused!

Re: Prizes for Publicity
Agree it is a nice piece that describes what we do well.
One very minor detail, there must be way more than 150 permanent courses across the country? Manchester area has 50 alone. Seem to remember Paul Turner attempting to visit all across the country and he had more than 150.

Re: Prizes for Publicity
Two items of Publicity for SN.
BRC Article
Article on our relay team winners in the W40 in the local Fleet News and Mail - all 3 ladies in our team are from Fleet - the article did also cover the location, the landscape and our SN winning Men's Short team, but that did not make the cut - not as glamorous or from Fleet. (That is one of our major problems in getting publicity - there are at least 4 editions of the News and Mail - Aldershot, Camberley, Farnborough, Fleet etc, then we have the Surrey News, Farnham Hearld - covering NE Hants and W Surrey means there are lots of News titles). The one good thing I was pleased about was the article made the Sports section rather than being considered a novelty in the general news section.
Articles can be seen here - https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... =1&theater
A shame the photo submitted was somehow mirrored from what was sent and hence names are listed in wrong order - I always embed the photo in the word article as a check for the reporter - oh well can't have it all!
Saturday Live - Radio 4
A mention for two of our members on the Thank You section of Sat Live 21 June edition - mentioned they were in Wales for Orienteering as part of the interview.

Re: Prizes for Publicity
We've now found the link on the Telegraph website for the above article: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/desti ... itain.html
It's easier to read than the image I posted above! There are a couple more pics too on there, which the Telegraph photographer took.

OK, so who wrote this? Don't tell me it was a Glasgow Herald journalist!
The Herald wrote
Possibly the most beautiful jog you can ever experience, Race the Castles offers various courses for runners to compete in. The open races are sprint, distance and urban courses with routes disclosed at the start line. The elite race will showcase a multinational invited set of runners. A variety of races of varying levels at Edinburgh, Stirling, Crathes and Balmoral. 11 until 19 October.
