Re: Prizes for Publicity
7:10 Chris Evans has just announced on Radio 2 that it is the British Orienteering Championships this weekend. Looks like a prize for the anonymous texter.

But it needs a link to the event website to be useful!

Lovely prizes (CompassSport pens) can be collected from the HOC tent at the British Relays

Re: Prizes for Publicity
Fab - thanks Mike - I will be bringing my bijou mobile Prize Publicity office to Croeso (It's a home made banner and a bag of pens) so please will everyone who has made the effort and got something published in what ever form please come and see me. It will also be at the Tamar Triple, The Harvester, The White Rose and of course The CompassSport Cup Final this year!
Just raise public awareness of the sport - in what ever form you want it to be - family sport - competition for all ages - hard core adventure etc etc by what ever means at your disposal - local paper reports, parish news letters, letters to regional papers, national or specialist magazines, texting radio stations etc etc.
I'm particularly interested in people working orienteering into other aspects of their lives - hence my suggestion that they register for Park Run as orienteers and starting the Wikiteering thread in Banter - I think it would be wonderful if all those people had their interest in orienteering listed in their wikipedia entry
Any ideas for what more we could do to make orienteering less of a secret society?

Hey maybe you're wrong! look how successful groups like the Masonic Lodges are -people are desperate to get in. Maybe we should have restricted membership and hurdles to cross to join to make being recognised as an orienteer desirable?
Now whats the secret handshake -dibbing the palm?
Now whats the secret handshake -dibbing the palm?
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Re: Prizes for Publicity
I believe it's the sweat shirt logos and esoteric car stickers which are the secret signs.
......and that's another thing - when you sign up for these other events, make sure you use the word "orienteering" not just the initials

We could start using actual words and place names in the results from our events, instead of things like HFGFHJHGOC. You know, like other sports do.
We could also start calling them races, instead of events. Good luck expecting a newcomer to understand the difference between an event and an activity.

Re: Prizes for Publicity
hey do great minds think alike? Driving to Twin Peaks event today I pondered on the directional signs - they just say "Orienteering" as we all know. I thought if Races was to be included after "Orienteering" it might be a little something to change the image. So when new signs are made that is what is needed in my view? Just like you have just said Scott in you post. Let's call orienteering - orienteering racing - when we talk about our sport.
And thank you Mrs H for your ideas and enabling spirit. It has got me thinking....
