Following on from Sunlit Forres promoting stuff on CBeebies there was the opportunity to go along for a much more interesting session.
Hard to see at this resolution but there is a SPORTIdent box in the picture and the map is East Culbin

Re: Prizes for Publicity
My son is bringing his map from Saturday's event into school tomorrow for "show and tell". *
Of course it would be better if adults did show and tell at their work etc. But in offices this is replaced with "Cake Wednesday" etc. The map is a great unused publicity resource though. Saturday's map had the next event printed on... good practice widely adopted, but I can't help thinking that it could be used more...
* does that get him a pen?

Re: Prizes for Publicity
It's a bit similar with Facebook. Orienteers seem to be reluctant to share posts on their own pages which is such a shame because it's an electronic version of chatting to your mates in the staff room. What's more, it looks good when outsiders see a lot of vibrant social 'chat' going on within the sport. We should all be employed by MI5 as we're so good at keeping things a secret.

Get other bodies to help with your publicity...
Any other club's using Join In Local Sport initiative this summer?
https://www.joininuk.org/locations?q=ilford&sport_id[]=27&distance=300&sort=distance
And if you do put on something, make sure it is on the BBC Things To Do listings also
http://www.bbc.co.uk/thingstodo/activity/orienteering-taster-fairlop-waters/occurrence/276854
Anyone got other suggestions to extend the reach of the online/other promotion? (Yes Facebook, Twitter obviously)

Re: Prizes for Publicity
Thanks for the Join In Link Alan. Must admit I'd not heard of that one, but it doesn't look to be very well used here in Scotland (the only listed events within 100 miles of me are the parkruns).
There are plenty of running sites that offer free listings. A very good one in scotland is Scottish Running Guide eg http://scottishrunningguide.com/race_listings.php/28/07/2013/scottish_6days_orienteering_festival__day_1 and there are other good ones such as Runners' World and Running Diary http://www.runningdiary.co.uk/
We've been known to have people turn up after including events in http://www.wherecanwego.com/
The local press is the best of all and if clubs make the effort to get to know the sports editor, and send in things regularly (with good photos), it's easy to make orienteering a regular feature - almost a weekly club newsletter!

Regret that this year's holiday is in Eurodisney + Dordogne. If the S6D could move south by a thousand miles or so that would be handy.
Runners World always got us a few newcomers if things are phrased right. Many of the sites mention don't get stacks of people but are free and once you set one event up you can copy/paste details onto new events. Helps if you can get your club to agree times/dates etc of local events many months in advance.

Re: Prizes for Publicity
People I work with know I orienteer - so far over 10 years I think I've got 2 people to come to races. Turns out some people just don't fancy running round with a map...

Re: Prizes for Publicity
Just to ensure that MrsH gives me a pen when she next sees me, I'm going on lionheart radio (www.lionheartradio.com) Saturday morning sports show -before our Pit-O at Prudhoe (plug#1) to talk orienteering (they've asked me to arrive just after 8am).
I'll be mentioning the October Odyssey @ Druridge Bay (12th and 13th October -will include the southern sand dunes which as the only person to have planned on so far are technical!!!) incorporating the British Schools Score Championships (plug#2) , next year's BOC at Thrunton May 30th on (plug #3), our upcoming Summer Series in North Tyneside (mainly) (plug#4) and even Roxburgh Reviers event at Wilton Park Hawick (plug#5) and WOC2015 (plug#6)
(Oh and I might mention our event at Rising Sun on 30th June as plug#7)

Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Is Rising Sun a 4 a.m. start or an evening event at "The Rising Sun" pub?

Actually the "The Rising Sun" pub is a few miles away. The event is on the Rising Sun Country Park -which is on the site of the Rising Sun Pit. Apparently named because of the night all the mine workers came to work early because they mistook the mine owner's house being on fire for dawn breaking.

A pen should be sent to Graham Norton for his brief mention of Orienteering on Just a Minute today!
