Re: Prizes for Publicity
I think "Orienteering Race" is too long for a road sign. "O Race" on the other had has the advantages of being only 5 letters (plus a space) and might be more intriguing?
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Re: Prizes for Publicity
Personally, I think we need to banish cryptic abbreviations altogether (although I would make an exception for "JK"). My latest bête noire is "BSBM", which sounds like something which it probably isn't safe for me to look at at work.
And the habit off calling prefixing anything and everything to do with the sport with "O-" is not remotely helpful. I think a sign reading "orace" would just be baffling, rather than intriguing. If "orienteering race" is too long to fit on your sign as one line, couldn't you just print it on two lines?
To be frank, a sign that just read "orienteering" would actually be a massive improvement for some clubs, whose stock of signage appears to consist primarily of tiny squares of red and white accompanied by an equally minute arrow.
And don't get me started again on the "final details" (which itself is a bizarre name, given that most clubs seem to revise the PDF several times in the week before a race). "Parking: off the A123 GR 456789"...

Re: Prizes for Publicity
Is it any sort of a first to have Orienteering and X-Factor mentioned in the same article?

Re: Prizes for Publicity
Wow it may well be but it is exactly the sort of popular cultural link we need - hence all my letters to the Daily Mail - the sport appears far to high brow for it's own good.
Thanks for the reminder AP - better get writing or Rav will be on my back

Brian Parker is surely worthy of a prize for his letter in The Times today about the Olympics, WOC 2003 and pigs.

Very good - it won't let me view the whole letter on line (not being a subscriber) but it looks like Mr Parker is a regular contributor to the letters page.
too late for the next edition of Compasssport as my latest update has already gone, but collect those lovely prizes in Wales at my bijou mobile prize stand (at the HOC tent)

Sir, The rural nature of the opening ceremony could be spectacularly and unexpectedly successful, if the animals do not behave as expected. A lesser but similarly themed arrangement at the World Orienteering Championships in Switzerland in 2003 had a small but convincing forest constructed inside the stadium to give a realistic finish to the courses. The opening ceremony featured a parade of rural Swiss life, which included a swineherd. At the sounding of the alpenhorns his charges took fright and sought refuge in the forest. The hapless attempts to recapture the wily pigs was so entertaining that the live television coverage was extended.
The ceremony was the talking point of the nation for days.

Re: Prizes for Publicity
When our club's top veteran runner pursuaded one of his running colleagues to have a go at orienteering this summer it resulted in an article in the Outdoor Enthusiast magazine. A link to the article can be found on the front page of the SO website. http://www.southdowns-orienteers.org.uk/

Re: Prizes for Publicity
What a great article, spoiled in my opinion by the expensive looking checklist of what you need to go. If I read it as a stranger I'd assume that I'd have to pay £35 for a SI Card - no suggestion one can be hired. That would definitely prevent me from trying it.

Re: Prizes for Publicity
Do they have a letters page? Maybe someone might send them a letter about cheaper options for beginners and have another bite of the publicity cherry.
Perhaps they are trying to show what a typical experienced orienteer would spend on kit? And at least it shows that it's a serious sport rather than a pastime that is done with welly boots and a compass out of a christmas cracker.

Re: Prizes for Publicity
SN Publicity in last 6 days
Note the approach came from BBC Surrey having seen the SN publicity elsewhere, but presumably other local radio stations run 'What's on' features and must be worth an approach.
Three (do we get 3 prizes?) such publicity items in 1 week is an exception however concerted publicity by the SN team over the last 3 years has seen our Saturday Series events over 8 races increasing the attendance from;
2009/2010 - Ave 146
2010/2011 - Ave 168
2011/2012 - Ave 192
2012/2103 - Ave 208
Yesterday for the second time this season we beat our ever highest attendance with 241 entries which with many Junior pairs and families meant over 300 at a low-key Level D event. The only challenge we have is that some of our areas we used to include in the Series cannot cope with the parking - we even had one school yesterday who arrived with 45 children on a coach!
From the BOF strapline 'More People, More Places, More Podiums' SN are doing their bit for 'More People' and with 2 juniors who were regular participants at the SN Saturday Series event, now in the Elite / Talent Development Squads this is a good starting point for the 'More Places, More Podiums'!
- 1 minute recording on BBC Surrey radio station at start of week regarding our forthcoming Saturday Series event at Frith Hill
A much delayed report on the YBT final in December along with photo and mention of Frith Hill event in the weekly free Newspaper (Star Courier) that goes to thousands over the SN area
Live breakfast morning interview with BBC Surrey yesterday morning.
