I'm starting to get quite excited about it now, specially as this'll be the first time I've taken my 7-year-old daughter away camping. I've no idea really what we need to take (well, apart from the obvious...) so the car will probably be overloaded with useless items, whilst some essentials will be forgotten. Anyone got a checklist?
meawhile there are some good views from the campsite-cum-event-centre at http://www.monstayfarm.co.uk/photogallery.html to whet one's appetite.

You might need a trailer - if this checklist is anything to go by!

Monstay is gorgeous, right in the middle of the forest. A bit short on distant views, you have to get to the summits for that - the planner will no doubt oblige.
Enjoy the dawn chorus and look out for fossils, they are everywhere in Bringewood, including the roadstone.

Is the "old dear watching tower" to be used for observing old dears, or for use by old dears?

I'll pm you our camping checklist, which includes essential items for the under 10s. Although in my experience, if the campsite can provide "friends" you're in for a great time.

I can confirm that as of Sunday evening there are 9 under fives and 41 5-15 year olds booked in on both Saturday and Sunday night - that's a lot of potential friends
As for the "old dear watching tower" your right - it's mine - I have a large spotlight mounted in it to make sure no one attempts to jump the fence under cover of darkness

Why would she need a machine gun? A sharp word would suffice
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

We're booked in for the campsite + 4 events and got tickets for the ceilidh
Two mutiday events in two months
The year's looking good so far. Can I request an Orcadian Strip the Willow for the ceilidh or is that just pushing my luck?

Well that might help with convincing the rest of the family to come camping with me
As for Adrian's query, it all depends what you consider "essential". I took a 3yo camping on a bike (also when he was 2, but cheated then and took a trailer, albeit not quite the sort of thing denzil is thinking of!)

Re: Springtime in Shropshire
Although not camping, experience on Saturday showed an unusual attraction of orienteering for 11 year olds. I was leading a birthday party for an 11 year old boy, with 11 boys, 3 girls & 2 parents in attendance, at a country park. By asking the children, I learned they'd done 1 session orienteering at the park in year 3, but in groups of 5 with adults on every point, plus a couple of sessions in their school grounds. So, I was keen to give them a bit more unsupervised fun - they ran star courses individually, and of course, none got lost. Then, we set off on Yellow course, everyone with a map, but with one leader for each leg - there wasn't enough time to set them off at 2 mins intervals for a course that takes minimum of about 45mins for novices, if they were to eat & drink before parents came to collect. They were so keen at observing features that they read all inscriptions on memorial benches & one beside a tree, calculating how old they were when they died and speculating how they died, as well as noticing different types of woodland and open ground on sides on paths. Towards the end, the leg leader discovered a dead rabbit on the path - pelvis bitten out & eyes pecked out, hence speculation about what killed it (concluded probably fox), then speculation about what to do with it. Eventually, they accepted my explanation that digging a grave with sticksand holding a funeral ceremony would take too long, and that we had enough benches without a memorial to "Peter Rabbit" - they were joking by this stage Back at base, we ate and several children and parents asked to see my examples of O maps - one boy was very pleased to hear that orienteering happens in Poland and that there are international symbols, as his mother is Polish, and despite attending a Polish club, he's not confident about his Polish for reading control descriptions & map keys!

Less than a week to go before the prices go up and on-line entries close on May 20th so In the words of Saint Delia:"Let's be 'aving you!" I have been a devotee of the words of Delia ever since she pronounced :"I am not and never have been a one glass girl"

Have just arranged for the caterers and real ale brewery to attend the camp site on Friday night - so don't worry about what you are going to eat or drink after your journey just roll up, pitch up and relax
