I await the discussion about 'punching through railings' and 'unlocked gates'!!
Personally I was a dsq having decided to visit a control that wasn't on my course this year, but was 2 years ago!

Re: 4th CIty of London Race
Great race! Thought I'd got the Barbican sussed until I came to leg 21-22 (on course 5, though most courses had something similar). Started off in what was actually the best route (the bit that was shown in the final details - doh!), didn't see a way through so went the long way round by the road. I must have lost 4 minutes at least!

Re: 4th CIty of London Race
Likewise - really pleased at the finish, then discovered I had missed a set of stairs on the way back into the Barbican, partly hidden by the control circle I thought (course 7). That cost me 1 minute, then I blew another 30-40 secs on the way to the final control by going back up to high walkway level when I could have stayed at street level.
Great event, really glad I can despite my foibles.

Re: 4th CIty of London Race
Penguin - Oh I don't think that the stairs were hidden by the circle, not on my Course 7 leastways; it was well broken.
An excellent morning (topped by a fine afternoon's rugby refereeing) of testing navigation at start and end, plus having to keep alert thrugh most of the middle. If I'm easy on myself, probably 1 min of mistakes, most of which were correctable at the time. Loved the last 3 controls on Cse 7 back in the Barbican. How can we get another level mapped for next year?!
2 very, very minor points for the planner - at my eyes' age the purple circle merges into the black of an uncrossable wall: an iota of extra cirle cutting would have enabled me to see that there was no route to #6 (182) from W; the red line from #22 (221) to #23 (198) went over a canopy and made it difficult to confirm that there was a route through. But, hey, those are minor points!
Went done SLOW and especially Gordon (and Ollie for the map).
(What happens when a small construction site disappears between printing and the event - are you allowed to run over the pink hatching? I was v careful to try to run round where I thought that it was!)

Re: 4th CIty of London Race
CBG - maybe my eyes then, I thought the black line on the stairs by 24 was solid, and am still struggling to see the gap in it.
I too got caught by the uncrossable fence at 6, and also took care to go round the small OOB in the road between 17 & 18 (went N side of the building in the middle of the road to play safe), though someone in front of me did run straight across it.
I agree the event was excellent and would like to add my thanks and appreciation to all those involved in putting it on. I will definitely be back for more .....

Re: 4th CIty of London Race
Really enjoyed my course 8 - infact Mr H said it looked more fun than his course 7. I also got confused in the Barbican and then stuffed up my route to the final control despite having walked past it on the way to the start and then ignoring all the people running past the "this way" signs - even if it was only 12 seconds (which it wasn't- it was much more) it still cost me two places.
I feel very tired this evening - it only seems to be London and Edinburgh which make my legs ache this way - I think it's because I spend the previous day pounding the hard pavements on the tourist trail.
No time to rest - off to drop my youngest at Sheffield tomorrow to start her teacher training. The empty nest looms

Another level? Hope that's a joke, had trouble enough!
Yes, planning was excellent, but the map is really something special.

Re: 4th CIty of London Race
Thoroughly enjoyable event. I've done all four races, and this was probably the best yet. Getting your brain round the multi-level Barbican is always a challenge, but having this challenge right at the start when you haven't really got going, and again at the end when you are exhausted makes it even more of a challenge.
Also got caught out by trying to be too clever in the middle of the course. 'The control just has to be on the far side of that uncrossable fence.' Of course it wasn't....
Thanks to everyone involved in the planning and organising.
Ditto! But what I lost in the extra climb I probably saved by not having to think, as I was simply reversing the previous leg.King Penguin wrote:on the way to the final control by going back up to high walkway level when I could have stayed at street level

Has Ollie had a mapping award for his London maps ever? He certainly should

Re: 4th CIty of London Race
After Lincoln I wondered if orienteering would trump puzzle solving at London. For me it did - an enjoyable challenge - thankyou to all involved. Course 7 perhaps played to my having swotted up on the old map more than courses which used the lower levels? My significant mistake came in the cemetery, missing the first turning amidst a gaggle of tourists. Is there not a climb in the Peak called cemetery gates?
PS Still enjoyed Lincoln!

Re: 4th CIty of London Race
Tremendous event, thoroughly enjoyed it and justified my excited anticipation. I would've liked more controls in the Barbican (we only had 4 including the last control out of 23) but what we had was fun.
Like drobin I saw people going through solid black lines (unlocked gates, particularly between 242-249) just because you can doesn't mean you can! And one has even put it on routegadget is a regular urban racer and was highly placed in their class!
Then there was the guy who was trying to contort his hand through the impassable fence at 193..............
Looking forward to next years race.

You'll have to confirm which controls - 249 was on my course, and I can see no route to that control from any on Routegadget that would take one through a solid black line.
Please substantiate your comment with course and control numbers (1-25 rather than 2xx)

Well 2-3 on course 9 is one instance. A gate is mapped as closed but was in fact open, and lots have people have already shown on routegadget that they ran through it.

I was at 199 (19 on 7) when several hands came through the railings! They were attached to a group of non UK club members.
