Re: Latest on WOC 2015 bid
I went to a business breakfast meeting this morning and 3 people that had nothing to do with the sport greeted me with the news that Scotland has won the World Championship bid - pretty amazing I think.

Re: Latest on WOC 2015 bid
We (the bid team) are so chuffed. It was a tense wait yesterday and great buzz to be told we had won the bid. Back in Scotland now but Lyn, Dave and Martin are lucky enough to be staying on for the final race. That whisky tasting and the promotional video starring Mharky went a long way to securing support!

Great job Freefall. I am going to have to move back! Now I have to decide whether I want to try and take part as a team member or an official...
Will? We've got proper fire now!

To me the map in the park looks totally clear, and I can't believe any elite orienteer would have trouble with it: keep off the grass. I heard a rumour that some runners stepped onto the grass to avoid (having to stop to avoid) colliding with pedestrians.
That sounds plausible, and has nothing to do with unclear mapping.
This from the South Africans blog
The primary error seems to be a lot of athletes accidentally or intentionally cutting across some lawns to the last control that had been marked 'out of bounds' (olive green) on the map.
I appreciate what you say about the map being clear, but thats not the same as the map reflecting whats on the ground. Regardless of the rights or wrongs of mapping such areas as olive green I think the elites did have trouble with it, and when so many do, you have to question the procedures.
I'm not an elite but if I'm seeing that run to the last control, I'm thinking its technically easy, lots of flower beds to avoid, head down and go for it. So i get there and after running over a couple of lawns i realise that there arent any flower beds and I'm DQ! Its a rat trap, and youve been caught.....

Congratulations to all the bid team. Great result for Scotland
Bring it on - but leave somewhere to stay for us ordinary punters. Seem to recall in 1999 that WOC had booked up virtually all the SC Cottages years in advance

Excellent result. It looks from the video as though they'll be using Emit though. Is this true? Seems strange as 6 days always uses SI and I would have thought elite athletes were more familiar with SI.

The promo video for the WOC 2015 bid on the SOA website shows an EMIT Brikke preceded by the words "cutting edge technology". It may have been that this was just because mharky used it in his TV star appearance which is the main o footage in the video, but I'm surprised a shot of someone using SI wasn't used if SI is to be used in WOC 2015.

Yes. There are a few aspects of WOC 2015 that haven't yet been fixed.
229 wrote:But i believe WOC99 used emit and Highland99 used SI, is that true?
It is. Sportident was relatively new in 1999, so the more proven Emit was used for WOC.

Eddie - as soon as I heard the news I rang round all the local media and directed them to the press release on the BOF web site. Moray Firth Radio covered it as breaking news, and it was front page on Friday's Inverness Courier. Other local weeklies are running articles, but incredibly, the local regional daily, the Press & Journal, chose to completely ignore it, just as they did Oban 2011 until I rang their local reporter on Day 3 to complain!! I haven't seen today's edition yet though.
Any Northern Nopesporters who feel as outraged about this as I do should write to the P&J editor demanding to know why.

P&J covered it on Friday, decent sized piece (bulk of the press release).

Is it not time that the BBC sport website had an orienteering page. Sports which don't attract thousands of competitors to their events have one - why not us?
Let me think - something to do with another word begining with O.
This is great news!

Not in the Inverness edition Brooner. I've just dug it out of the recycling sack and there's definitely nothing in my copy. It's reassurring that they've not totally ignored it though.

It is faintly ridiculous that this weekend's Cornwall Premier League cricket matches, which I know literally tens of people are interested in, have received more coverage from the BBC than WOC 2011 (and I reckon there must be at least couple of hundred vaguely interested in the British WOC performances).
I think part of the problem is that the BBC simply aren't getting the information. Sadly I don't think national news organisations tend to look at press releases sent to them by individuals or organisations they don't know (although this tactic can be effective with local media).
For a lot of the "Other sports" I suspect that the BBC is just reproducing slightly rewritten versions of press releases sent out over the PA wire service or similar by NGBs, clubs or athletes' agents. I'm not sure whether BOF have ever tried this (it's expensive). Based on hearsay, at least, it also helps if you if you know how to make it very easy for the journalists to (re)use what you send them.
If you want to do national-level PR seriously then it costs money - if it was easy to do then there wouldn't be a large and (relatively) thriving PR industry! WOC 2015 is obviously a fantastic potential publicity opportunity for the sport in the UK, but I think that we need to think seriously about what (if anything) we might like to achieve on a "national publicity" front, work out how much it would cost, and figure out whether the benefits would actually be likely to be worth the investment. I have no idea whether eg. EventScotland would be willing or able to support us in this specifically.

Re: Latest on WOC 2015 bid
Merely being listed in "other sports" would be a start. Then the "cornish results" could be provided.... We don't wait 3 weeks for results now, which could have been the original reason for our invisibility.
Being recognised as a sport, getting from "out of doors" to the Saturday sports programme on Radio Scotland etc....
2015 got into general news which was great. This would have been a start for the O page.
This is a great time for "minority" sports - BOF should be getting some of the action.
