What are the rules regarding those areas which are embargoed for WCup 2005? I've been invited to go mountain biking in Leith Hill with some mates from down south. Would I risk disqualification, or is the situation the same as with domestic races, for example the JK, where one is allowed into an area so long as one is not taking part in "orienteering activities"?
I can't be bothered to look up the answer myself, but I'm sure someone out there will know.

I inquired recently about running training at the track on the edge of Battersea Park. To get to the track you walk all of about 200m on tarmac'd road through the park. Not allowed. Fair enough. Better off checking for peace of mind I think. Might help in sprint race areas more though as not as many trees obscuring the features.

Bit of a nightmare for all the adventure racers who use Cannock Chase.
Depending on the rules Im sure there are loads of people who have been in the enbargoed bits as it inlcudes most of the sherbrooke forestry!!!!
Whats the score for for JK2005 ???

Hi Neil.
It'll be worth checking what precisely is embargoed. Ilkley Moor is only a part of Rombald's Moor, and most of the moors won't be used, almost certainly.
The organisers must have been desperate. It's a great area for running etc., but the orienteering is about as simple and as visible as it gets, other than a small section on the slopes above Ilkley.
I doubt if I'll bother with the JK that year. If it's a choice between being able to run/walk/climb in my own backyard for the next 2 years, or staying off to run in a single fairly ordinary race at the end, I don't think there's much choice. Not that it would make any difference anyway - I don't think almost 20 years familiarity built up through regular useage would be much affected by staying off for the same number of months.

To much is made of embargoes... for the majority it makes little or no difference if you occassional go for a run on a potential JK area... for the elite it's different. As far as the WC areas in SE go then basically you shouldn't go off a paved road... I was down at the badge event or whatever last November & couldn't even run a CC course because of my connections with potential athletes at WC 2005.
If I was a team leader & knew that athletes had been on the area in advance... even on a bike... then I'd question thier eligibility.

How are you supposed to know / find out if an area is embargoed?
For the JK next year the only official information about day 2 (on the flyer and website) says that it is on a new bit of Cannock Chase. Which implies that running / cycling round Sherbrook is fine. It's only from postings on this site that I get the impression Sherbrook is included.
Perhaps the BOF website should have an embargoes page so you can easily see whether going somewhere is OK or not?

Surely if it's in your back yard, you will be helping - in which case you needn't worry about the embargo

for some areas like sherbrook, if local chaser people couldn't use it it would be stupid, they all know it like the back of their hands anyway, as long as people arn't going round with a fine tooth comb, which most orienteers have the mentality not to do anyway.
yes people shouldn't go training on areas if they are not local, but if say its your local area, like dimmingsdale was for me, there is no difference in running on i or not, in my oppinion

I don't know if the embargo on Ilkley Moor has actually been publicised at all. The latest Airienteers newsletter (available at http://www.aire.org.uk) suggests that it will be, but no detail is given about precise areas. I guess it's not really embargoed until BOF say it is - Anybody noticed any official announcements on the BOF website? There appears to be some confusion about next year's JK too.
