Seeing as we've archived the old UK Cup board, use this thread to discuss the series in 2011.
Racing kicks off this weekend with the British Night Champs, not many elites entered, so plenty of points to be had.
What do you think of the expansion for 2011? Does anyone the competition is aimed at care?

Re: UK Cup 2011
Well, I'm going to hijack this thread to announce that, after a prolonged delay, entries are finally open for the next UK Cup race (and first FCC race) - the JOK Chasing Sprint on Sat 12 March at Shotover, near Oxford. Please make sure you read all the details on the JOK website before entering.
The forest has undergone a lot of clearance work over the past few months, and combined with the cold winter this has increased the runnability dramatically. The Shotover part of the map has been massively revised for the event to reflect this - if you have run at Shotover before, prepare to be (pleasantly) surprised!

Love the idea, but now seems unlikely that the likes of myself and Scott will ever get enough scores to count. Race prioritisation / living abroad doesn't combine well with long series and almost all to count.
Elitserien in Sweden has lots of races, but still only 4 or 5 (plus the final) to count, so people can pick and chose a bit.

So who *is* the competition aimed at?
BOF is always big on making bland statements about this sort of thing, but a microsecond of thought shows that it can't be aimed at anyone who isn't based in the UK. Just like BEOC isn't aimed at any member of a club committed to TioMila, or targetting international selection. And BOC isn't aimed at top age-group runners like Jamie and JD.
The current UK Cup format looks great for punter-elites like Scott and myself...

Maybe Scott, wouldn't have thought you could call yourself that standard yet..

Indeed, the basic test of punter-elite standard is taking over two hours on an M21E course, and I know that graeme has failed to do so on several occasions.

Yes, but only when the winning time was also too short

Re: UK Cup 2011
All the organisers / visionists can do is put something together and hope that it gets people excited and want to participate.
There are top UK-dwelling orienteers who will go for this series and try to win it. I reckon I spotted a few names right from the very top and all through the British Nights results who might not have bothered racing it without the UK Cup status.
Even at the very top end it seemed like a decent race was had with fairly narrow margins between 1st & 2nd (for whatever reasons).
Isn't that the point - to just create some quality races with some good battles in the UK?
The best orienteers active across all UK terrains / disciplines through the whole year will win. No mean feat!
There are plenty of other titles like "British / JK / Swedish / Norwegian / World Champion" for people to have a shot at if the new look UK Cup doesn't suit their schedule / goals/ travel budget. Let's not detract from whoever wins this beasting thing by saying "yes but GG (/whoever) didn't participate"

Well said Harry
I remember a JK prizegiving when a few top names were competing somewhere abroad.
When Alice got on the top of the W21E podium the compere started talking about the absent people that really should have won it . Poor Alice left feeling like a bit of a lemon.
She won - her name is on the trophy and great for that.
