British Orienteering Championships weekend

Entries are open for the British Championships weekend in Sheffield (long/individual event on Saturday 14 May, then British Relays on Sunday 15 May). The deadline for early/discount rate entries is 20 February, so enter soon to take advantage of this. Relay entry deadlines are slightly after individual event deadlines, to help club captains.

I always thought the JK was a major championship.

It is. Did JK '78 use all three areas, combined in one race? Would be good to see the original map.

My course (M21) used all three areas, but only 1 control in Wheata wood.

I will try to scan in my faded map this evening.

The horizontal sleet took its toll, and I retired with exposure 3 controls from the end.
(I was seriously considering joining the sheep sheltering behind a wall!).
Thankyou to the St Johns ambulance man who drove me back to the car park, and to my friends who fed me until I was able to drive the minibus down to the launderette.

It was a big map; I think that Mike Smithard (now DEE) was involved?
I was responsible for stopping controls being vandalised in part of the area, this was mainly at the beginning of the event before competitors started coming through and at the end when there were fewer competitors. I too was a near exposure victim having had a few drinks during the mid period watching one of the boats sink in Oxford v Cambridge race in a nearby pub.
The other memory from that event was EPOC 'ladies' making, from a cotton material, all the control markers. Many evenings with sewing machines! they weighed a few kg each when wet!
I am looking forward to the event.

That JK was my first. I remember running throughout in great heat. The finish was some distance from from the car park. As I got back to the car the temperature fell 20 degrees or so it seemed and the sleet hit. I got cold in the fraction of a minute it took me to unlock my car and get in.

You were lucky, I was 3/4 of the way round M21E and I remember having extreme difficulty punching my card when the blizzard hit. I remember the organisers being lenient on inaccurate card punching due to frozen fingers.

Did anyone involved with the event notice that the Individual Day information page talks about BOC 2010, not 2011?

Ah were 'alf way through mi warm up on top o' Kinder Scout wearing just a pair o' shorts and no shirt.
Ah 'ad to run back via the Woodhead Pass cos the snow were so deep. Ah were so late ah 'ad to put the course back out and the run round it in the dark wi no torch.

I'll be posting the JK 78 map just as soon as I receive it. Or did you want something more recent?

Yes, the last versions of Wharncliffe/Wheata, and Greno, should each be on SYO Routegadget soon.

Tankersley, which is the British Relays area, is there already, but the BRC map will have an extension of new bell-pit terrain to the north.

Thanks. Yes I'd seen the Tankersley routegadget. Sadly I'm much too unreliable for anyone to want me in their relay team
