So I was orienteering recently and on one particular control (I think it was the 5th one) I was a bit unsure when entering the circle. Suddenly, I saw a flash of orange off to my right. Thinking it was my control I ran over in it\'s direction. Turns out it was in fact another competitor in a very brightly coloured orienteering top. I was really but off for the rest of the course. Luckily, the race wasn\'t that important as there weren\'t enough other competitors for ranking points to be awarded.
I think some new kit regulations should be created. I understand that to attract new orienteers to the sport then kits which look exciting should be encouraged. However, at very important events such as the British and the JK the the use of at least the colours orange and red should be banned so that competitors are not distracted - and can therefore achieve maximum ranking points.

Re: Another Clothing Thread
Sounds like a classic case of "distraction" to me.
When I drift towards a flash of orange and it isn't (a) a control or (b) my control I blame my poor technique or a lack of focus on the matter in hand.
Remember those times when you're drifting off and brought back on-line by that flash of orange? Be careful what you wish for!

Re: Another Clothing Thread
When I started, in the mid 70's, the only colours available were dark green, navy, dark brown and black, so that you didn't show up at controls.
This was gradually changed to what we see today. I remeber getting a bright greenO suit and being critised because it was too bright !!

I thought the idea was to navigate to the feature. If you are generally searching for a flag then you are already in the world of chance and therefore it is hard to see why you should be so upset when the lck is bad.
Next you'll be blaming the planner for not clearing the forest of any stray coke cans or Sainsbury's bags.

I think nobody should be allowed to wear orange but that is just because I advocate the introduction of bonus moving controls. At big races we should get someone to run around the forest dressed in orange and white with an SI box. If you find and catch the person you get 10% off your time. You could even get a company to sponsor the moving control. A good way of getting extra revenue and adding a bit of excitement. Ideally the sponsor would obviously be orange mobile but they are probably a bit too big a company for domestic competition.

or easyjet. dont think you could seriously have this at the major events, but could be an interesting new discipline. and with the way norway is pushing the IOF it could be one of the WOC races by 2020 anyway

I think I am right in saying that there used to be a rule.... that competitors weren't allowed to wear red. Long since removed from the rule book though.

And strictly no bleeding
or trying so hard that you go red in the face.
Anyone with severe sunburn or a bottle tan will not be allowed to start.

We had three 'moving' controls at our recent Stealthily Seeking Santa & Scrooge score event. On Norland Moor we had two roving Santas 'HoHo' and 'HoHoHo' (dressed in Red) who had SI boxes plus boxes of chocolates and if you managed to find one you were rewarded with a chocolate & 20 bonus points. Also wandering about was 'Bah Humbug' (Scrooge) again with SI unit but your reward was 20pts plus a humbug!

Re: Another Clothing Thread
In the appropriate weather I've been known to wear a Rugby Shirt (Red or White & Red) or a Red Cycling top (all lycra pulls everything in) to run and I bought a bright orange running top in the sales (I'm trying to fill the hole left by Freefall going over the border).
I remember running along a path at the JK a couple of years ago looking for a vegetation edge to lead me to my control when I saw a flash of orange about where I judged the control to be. Unfortunately it was an orienteer ; fortunately he'd just left the control

Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Don't knock red. Eryri, the club that introduced me to orienteering in the days of pin punches and washing lines, now have very smart red tops. I only wish they'd had them when I was in the club!
As for moving controls - did anyone go to Swinley West where there was a photographer with a kite hanging off the back of his daysac? At one point he was 5 metres from one of my controls... that was a little distracting.
