That is good news - I often wonder how much of our mapping heritage has survived. I have an extensive collection dating back to 1970, but sadly I no longer have a copy of the map that started me off, the 1969 Midland Championship at Haye Park (part of Bringewood) in Herefordshire. The start was outside a relative's house and he was presented with a copy - which I used to explore the forest. I remember finding the idea of runability very useful and being amused by the term "fight".
It would be good if there was some archive or library that could house a national map collection - perhaps there is. I fear that our history could easily be destroyed in house clearances by those unaware of the significance of these funny bits of paper.
I am very keen that my collection will one day be part of such an archive and not lost. Especially the early maps. Also, I know there are copyright issues, an online library of historic orienteering maps would be a fine resource.

Re: First Orienteering Certificate Devilla 1971
Most of my earliest maps and certificates (my first event was in Dec 1970 on Headley Heath, in the Boys class) unfortunately disappeared many years ago, when a file they were kept in, and which was submitted for my Duke of Edinburgh award at school, when walkabout and was never returned. I do still have one or two, including several of Ranmore Common, where the school club learned the ropes, and the first map of Hambleden (being used for this year's Southern Champs) - one of my earliest badge events. The earliest certificates I have are from 1972: a Boy's Gold badge certificate from and a SEGallopen certificate in the same class.
My first ever formal event was on Dec 13, 1970, at an MV Badge Event on Headley Heath, in a pair. I remember it well, with one control (a re-entrant - what on earth was that?!) taking 20 minutes to find in the fog, but we finished. 40th anniversary coming up soon!
On the subject of Compass Sports and Orienteers, I have a complete run stored away which gets regularly rifled through for historical info - fascinating stuff!. As for archives - I know that the BOF archive of results etc was being stored at Sheffield Uni, but don't know about maps. What the situation is nowadays with so few results being printed, I have no idea. It does bother me that with the demise of the BOF statistician role, this side of things could be falling by the wayside, but hope I'm wrong. Anybody know any better (Spookster in your role as director?).

BOF archive still is at Sheffield Uni, and the issue of record keeping was very briefly discussed at the last Board meeting (item 7.b). Sorry, I don't know any more than that about what is stored where.

Re: First Orienteering Certificate Devilla 1971
By sheer coincidence, John Woodall and I were viewing the archives today!
They consist of
At present, just the boxes and various bundles are indexed but it is hoped that the librarians will (in time) make a catalogue of the contents of each box so that interested researchers can find out exactly what's in the archive before visiting to view material.
There is also a proposal that results from past JKs and BOCs, along with other selected documents of historical significance, are scanned and made available from the BO website. There is simply too much material there to scan in everything.
Would anyone (preferably local to Sheffield) be willing to help with this scanning?

3 boxes of results files 2003-2008

The Orienteer 1967-1982

There is a "Scottish Orienteering Championships, Midlands District, Pitmedden, 1968" in our house - from Sarah's aunt who used to teach at Dollar.

....and Donald P tells me that in his house he's got the original master maps from the 1st Scottish Champs which were held on Sunday 24th June 1962. They were held around Dunkeld, mostly at Craig a Barns on the OS 1:25,000 map. The 1st SOA AGM was held after the event at Dalguise House.

Please PM me if you think that the BOF archive would be a good place to keep these ... or are we into Stone of Scone territory here

It would be lovely to see these old maps online...
Meanwhile, I have put a few vintage maps up on a blog - well until the copyright catches up with me.....

Most are from the English West Country - I am concentrating on 1975 and before at the moment.

Great blog Richard - keep 'em coming.
Don't think the OS will be chasing you for copyright as the maps they will have been based are well over 50 years old!

Re: First Orienteering Certificate Devilla 1971
Over the next week or so I'll be helping to sort a stack of orienteering documents going (potentially) back to the late 1960's. When I checked out the Sheffield archive on the internet at http://archiveshub.ac.uk/data/gb200-ms232 it would appear that the cataloguing hasn't maybe got as far as including some of the materials described on this thread as being there in 2010.
Has anyone got more up-to-date knowledge of what is now being accepted and what route to take to donate material? There is some pressure on time and storage space here, but I could transport the material to Sheffield after some initial cataloguing if it would be of interest.
Do we have any info on how often this archive is accessed? An alternative would be to give it to an active O club which has its own archive which is in regular use, but I suspect that clubs without clubhouses/other permanent bases are unable to maintain an organised and publicly accessible archive.
