Getmapping is worth looking at for Scotland.
Unfortunately the Environment Agency LIDAR data only covers a few cities in Scotland.

Re: LIDAR
After this discussion I downloaded a few free samples, and requested a few others.
Some of the data was not good, it looked like 5m resolution data interpolated up to 1m (buildings turned into large igloos).
However some of the data was better than I expected.
The best source seemed to be Geomatics (an arm of the environment agency) with coverage of about 60% of England, at a resolution of between 2m and 25cm. Vertical resolution seemed to be better than 10cm.
Both DSM (Digital Surface Model or canopy data) and DTM (Digital Terrain Model or ground data) are required to get the maximum out of the data.
You can manipulate the data to get Ocad templates for eg vegetation height, contours, depressions/knolls/earthbanks/ditches etc.
It seems it really can see through the trees/shrubs/heather to the ground below.
The other good news for the amateur mappers out there is that there is a 66.6% discount for non commercial use, reducing the costs for DTM+DSM data from about 200 to about 70 pounds per square km.

Re: LIDAR
LiDAR data is almost entirely absent for WOC areas. Scotland was flown by Blom under a project managed by Atkins. The data is almost entirely a strip along river valleys and some sections of coast. Some of the DTM (and DSM) data was provided to Stirling Surveys for updating Faskally (on the Tay) and proved very successful.
I have a copy of the outlines of areas already captured in Scotland but note that in the near future there will be a website available for ordering data. Moravian have identified an area which is covered by LiDAR and will order the data once the website is up and running. If anyone has projects in Scotland by all means contact me for advice.
The Scottish Government is now looking at what they call LiDAR2 - there may be a different contractor but Blom/Atkins must obviously hope they get a follow on contract. I have asked the Scottish Government GIS Service to include a few priority areas including WOC (and areas identified by Big Jon) to be included on the next fly past. I do not know what the charges will be.

Re: LIDAR
I thought BO Map Group had started a project on LIDAR - try Dave Olivant - not sure Map Group still in operation.

Re: LIDAR
There was a workshop on using LIDAR. But I don't think Map group has the resources to buy an aeroplane.

Re: LIDAR
A LiDAR survey of the entire country has / is being done here in Sweden. We have a professional map maker in our club who uses the data for all his maps now. The detail in the data he has got hold of is quite amazing. I'm not sure what system they have used but it gives very good topographic imagery even in areas of relatively thick forest. I'll try to remember to ask him this weekend.

Re: LIDAR
I've looked through the various links in this thread but I'm finding them a bit baffling- too many acronyms etc.
So here are some questions, I hope those who know will be able to help.
Assuming I want to map a rural area for which LIDAR etc is available.
1. what's the best data format to get, where 'best' might mean easiest to use/most accurate/most economic?
2.how do you produce a contours-only base map from the data?
Sorry if the answers are already in the thread- I have read through a few times but can't quite get my head round it!
Thanks
Richard

1. The Environment Agencys Geomatics Group (https://www.geomatics-group.co.uk/geocms/) is a good source. Under a BOF agreement you have to buy the commerical license which is ~£250sqkm for high res lidar.
2. You can generate the contour only map from ASCII in Ocad 11 (I'm told) or in ArcGIS.
Hope that helps

Re: LIDAR
The latest OCAD 11 has surprisingly good LiDAR support. I recently used it in a non-orienteering context (it saved my dissertation!!) because it now supports the import of LiDAR data. From this, it can produce contours at a given interval, a proper Digital Elevation Model and even a DEM of difference. There are simple wizards for all of this.
Format-wise, I don't know where you get data from (mine came from an Xbox Kinect but that's another story). If you do use OCAD 11, it needs to be one of these formats: ESRI ASCII Grid (*.asc), Raw data ASCII XYZ file (*.xyz), ASCII Grid XYZ file (*.xyz), LAS file (*.las) or SRTM file (*.hgt) file.
Have a look at this page for more info. There is a fully-featured trial version which gives you 30 days of testing.
