What an enjoyable event on such a nice day. A nice and simple and straightforward event. Only three courses, a 15.5km, 12.5km or a 9.5km. I chose to do the 12.5km with only nine controls, but with long legs in between.
Just before I got to control 109, I was just behind this guy who I noticed that had stopped behind a 4x4 and started to drink a cup of water. There were a few people around this vehicle, so I approached and noticed the big water container.
I thought, great a water stop half way round the course, but I could not remember this been on the instruction that were given too us, I must have missed it. So I went up and asked if I could fill my bottle up, yes go ahead. Big thank you from me and off I run. Caught the guy up who had had a drink before me and I said to him that I could not remember the water stop been mentioned. He said there was no water stop, but he saw the container and was that desperate for a drink he asked if he could have some. Oh, and there's me filling my bottle up, well as least I did say thank you before I ran off.....
So who ever you were, thanks for the water.
A big thank you also to Wrekin Orienteers for organising such a great event, can we have more of these long O events please.

Good to see the Mynd back in action. There used to be (1970s) a lovely A3 1:20k map of the place and it was well used for "normal" events.

I "ran" one of my earliest events there in 1980 - I remember lots of contours, about 3 trees and finish being a steep damp path down to the valley bottom with a hand-break turn over lush grass before the final finish chute. Like several others I slid across the grass on my rs having failed to keep on my feet or make the turn.

Some great route choice legs - direct and down/up or the long way round with less height to gain / lose. Even better, I thought the optimum (or at least the route I chose) was not the same in all cases.

I was the organiser of this event in 1980 & well remember early finishers hurtling down the steep wet grass slope.
I hurriedly wrote out a warning sign & placed it just after the last control at the top of the descent, unfortunately competitors only had time to read the warning before they too
took the rapid descent ,from then we had to have an official to warn of the hazard.
Although I was not involved with the recent event I was pleased to read the favorable comments & trust future events will be held.

What is it about Shropshire and cheesechaser descent finishes? Anyone remember a badge event at Weston, where the run in was the crag pretending to be a motorcycle track?

Sounds a good race. a shame it's so far away. I enjoyed cycling over Long Mynd years ago.
