Routegadget reproduction

I was just wondering, in light of the Lincoln event, why Routegadget versions of a course look so different to the paper maps. I had been wingeing about control 10 on course D being open to interpretation because of the previous wrong control description and the location of the circle - but on the routegadget the location of the control on the ground is obvious.

I scanned in my map to show you what I mean but I don't know how to load the jpeg image (Scott - help!)

I know what you mean Mrs H, but I think its something to do with the size of the file you can upload to routegadget. If its too big (ie too high resolution) it wont cope with it. The first time I tried to upload an event with the main map file (about 5Mb) and Paul Frost went yikes and immediately resized it to around 0.5Mb.

In your scan, the circle looks spot on - wall NW inside corner is right in the middle of the circle. (There's another to the north but that's in OOB land.) Besides, even if it wasn't directly in the middle of the circle, it's the control description that would reveal the feature it was on - estimating where the exact centre of the circle is lying on is always risky.

As to why Routegadget doesn't always line up, perhaps a better question is why do so many Routegadgets manage to line up? The process is either completely manual (a tired official generally needing to click on the locations on screen, with the map as a background picture) or semi-automatic, where two opposite corners of the map still need to be lined up with the background picture. There is no fully automated way of transferring controls from course planning applications to Routegadget, because none of the data is absolutely spatially referenced (i.e. pinned on a globe).

I'm looking at the map in my hand (Course A No 16, aka control 60) and it's definitely NW inside corner here. The dot is to the NW of the line.

Yes it was control 60 and remember we were furnished with written loose descriptions (because it was also a junior course) which describe the feature as "wall inside S. E. corner" no little pictorial diagram to help with interpretation. Well anyway you now begin to understand that given the previous control problem, why I felt the control site was open to interpretation, and given the lack of technical challenge in the earlier part of the course, why I thought the control was the other side of the wall and ran to the only opening at the top of the open area (which thankfully was a locked gate )

The routegadget version of the siting of this control is much clearer.

In that case (control description wrong) you have a very good case for having that leg voided as well - regardless of previous problems that is a clear error.

Perhaps because the circle was cut assymetrically the larger segment/arc (or whatever the proper geometric term is) draws your focus away from the true centre such that the centre appears further south than it really is.

No, your not missing anything, it was indeed on the path. As mentioned before the control description was accurate.

Pictorial control description on course B was "inside SE corner" and hence correct for the control position on the path between the walls. I believe it caught a few people out who tried to find it in the open land. I was particularly careful on this one to check the description well before the road fork to the south of the control.

On course D the descriptions on the map were pictorial and if a runner had looked at them
they would also have noticed No 9 was showing 'Wall East side'

We had same leg on course C (18 to 19) and running down east side of the road to 19 (9 on C) The control was visible before you needed to make a decision whether to go to the west side of the wall.

As for No 10 on D course my wife reasoned that as it was a Junior course with straight forward navigation it would be on the path, not trying to take juniors into a tricky area (yellow on the map)

Why would you unfold your map to look at the control descriptions when you had what should have been a perfectly good set on your arm? That's just wasting time!

Why would you go to a control which according to your control descriptions was definitely in the wrong place (ie not your control)? That's just wasting time!

Yes your wife told me that is what she thought - It was a good logical deduction. Have you discussed your theory on control 9 with her?
