I was reading through a "Complete Guide to Improving Your Game" (of golf) and was somewhat surprised to find a whole chapter centred around orienteering. To quote (if that doesn't breach copyright):
Orienteering
For a moment it is worth considering how a non-golfer might approach the problem [moving from A to B, tee to green]. If an orienteer, for example, was negotiating the ground from A to B what skills would he employ? he might:
- Look afresh at every hole, assessing the lie of the land without pre-conceptions; this may sound simple but an orienteer will inevitably be presented with unfamiliar terrain so he will always think afresh
- ensure, at all times, he has a good idea of where he is in relation to the surrounding area and his intended objective, once he is on the move the perspective changes so what was valid from the map at the start might not be relevant now
- use any pre-planned route or map only as a guide; he will know that maps and route planners are only a starting point.
The section goes on to describe:
-reactive targeting (not sure if this an O-term?
- attack points
-handrailing
-aiming off
- pacing
- course reviews
Not sure if I have ever read any golf tips for orienteering! Tonight I am playing golf at Longhirst so will try the game with a whole new mentality! Note: keep out of the dark green

As an orienteer i have to say that finding myself on a golf course generally constitutes a significant error somewhere along the line.......
(Unless its a Stag night event of course)

I have seen Freefall's orienteering gear and some of it would clash with anything (including itself)
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

My favourite Lycras did make a rare guest appearance on Sunday I have to confess (that was orienteering, not on the golf course). I'm not actually sure how they would react to Lycras at the Club - I haven't seen wearing of them forbidden but on the other hand they are possibly of limited use for tucking a scorecard in the back pocket.

Of course most O tops would be banned at decent clubs as they don't have a collar. They let Tiger play sans collar at Augusta and St Andrews and look what a c*d he turned out to be eh Major !
