Hi Folks,
Apart from Chorley and Carlisle are there many other urban maps in the North West?
I've been asked if I'm interested in a 5km race in Blackburn on 11/7, it would be more tempting if I could link it up with some sprint training while I was in the area. What are my options?

Center Parcs Whinfell.
Actually there isn't a map, though it would be brilliant. They do offer "orienteering" in a form which seems designed to put people off ever wanting to do it again. BOF should either sue them or (better) get them a proper map.

That's a pity. I imagine there are a fair few potential orienteers amoungst them.

However there could be a business opportunity for some enterprising individual/club. Centre Parcs is big business, and their business model is dependant on keeping people on their campus spending money. So if someone can show them how to make their "orienteering" more popular with visitors, then they might be willing to pay decent money for a proper map, design a permanent course, train their staff to (say) organise mass start score events for their punters .... families competing against each other etc etc. Not sure if anyone needs to wait for BOF either. For Centre Parcs orienteering might not be the top attraction, but relatively cheap to set up so possibly quite attractive for them.
And the 6ft high prison fences should stop campers going off the map.

Not a big area, but comparable to the Chorley area used for the qualifiers, is Salt Ayre and Scale Hall in Lancaster. Seehttp://www.sroc.routegadget.co.uk/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=61&kieli=
Maybe no use to you Rocky, but there is a sprint event there, with qualifier and reverse-order-start final next Tuesday evening (15th June). Details here.

Aye Ambleside is good. Ran a sprint there as training last year.

If u don't mind travelling a little bit from blackberry then Lancaster uni and Williamson park aren't too bad. Also, epoc have an event on a new urban area at holmfirth the week before your 5km.

Agree a sprint map of centre parks whinfell/oasis would be good, but entry to compete would be expensive if day pass required. Duncan and I did the orienteering there years ago, agree it was rubbish, uninspiring routes and I think the controls were too far apart. We gave up part way round, deciding it was the most boring o course ever, the ranger talks and walks about badgers and squirrels were much more interesting.
The mass start score event sounds like a good idea. At peak times many events get booked up and there's only so much swimming and noise most adults can cope with. There are many ranger supervised events on and this could be a good one to add.
Not done any English urban events.

I think that KP is just trying to show the spambots how it should be done..

Ok- that was a bit too cryptic even for me.
If it helps I was reading it after looking at a large number of automated postings n the printer thread which have now been deleted. The only remaining evidence is the one that Epocian replied to here viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6538&p=118379#p118379
it occurred to me that a an automated posting might make more sense if it simply copied likely words from an earlier posting, but yes I did realise that KP had simply not see john Robinsons post as epocian commented.
