Congratulations to wrekin for an excellent low key event. A park venue, with toilets, showers. and a cafe ( outside seating if required). Some excellent courses in a small but perfectly formed little town , with lots of route choice and general interest. But where were the punters. ( 23 on the long, 37 on the middle). Ah , not a league match, was that the reason or was there something more compelling on elsewhere??
The advertising was a bit low key and arriving to do a "sprint" which turned out to be 5.6K looked a tad odd but they had a twist ( they split the course in half, you did one half returned to base, downloaded and then , after a brief rest and a welcome drink , did the other half ) An interesting approach i thought, which allowed me at least to push the early pace more than I might have done otherwise ( sprintish pace rather than plod pace . )The long was the same , it allowed for a long course in a fairly small town centre and I didn't notice people complaining it was too easy going around twice.
An interesting format.

Seconded.
An enjoyable event making the most of the town centre and I too was surprised there were not more takers.
I hear there are plans to extend the map for the next event there.....

Low key is the answer: I didn't even know it was on!

Re: shrewsbury urban event
People have to make choices - I had hoped to attend but the previous day's Chester University open day visit had taken it's toll - if the event had been in the league i'd have looked at incorporating it with an overnight stay but that would have involved Mr H not working on Saturday and Miss H not being at home to revise on Sunday - it all comes down to time, money, energy and priorities.
I'd very much hoped to do next weekend's urban/sprint double but Mr H is controlling an event on Saturday and we have a family event on Sunday - sometimes something has to give and lets face it - it would be a bit sad is orienteering was the most important thing in your life

Re: shrewsbury urban event
there are still a few spare maps for the Brit Sprints (and EOD for the Winchester Urban O) if anyone feels that they can perhaps squeeze it in after all!

I might have considered it if it was SI or even new type EMIT but not with those awful old type that always seem to be the wrong way round when you go to punch/can't see light flash if sunny etc

Salop is an excellent venue - I would love to see the map, is there one knocking about on the interwelly thing.
The town I would not want to miss though is Ludlow - any plans? Imagine starting up on Whitcliffe, some reasonably technical woodland before the steep descent and crossing of Dinham Bridge to the medieval town centre. I bet the Whitcliffe commoners would kybosh it though.

Re: shrewsbury urban event
just saw this and thought I ought to share it.
Urban orienteering is a one-day competition that affords leisure education program participants an opportunity to put recently learned skills to the test. The event is a unique approach to treatment-related therapeutic recreation goals within a functional community environment. Skillful practitioners can design an urban orienteering experience that will improve specific functional capacity, while simultaneously preparing individuals to participate in leisure experiences that are personally satisfying.
So what are they treating us for again young man??

I'm very much looking forward to this years Shrewsbury urban 'o' - 17 July. The start will be from Frankwell (I think) which will make the courses more interesting for those of us who competed last year and yes the map has been extended, its well worth the entry !!
